F5: 4k options for the f5

I am thinking the f5 may be more in my budget - especially because we seem to be getting an inflated price in Australia. The f5 looks fantastic however I really love the idea of recording a compressed 4k file onboard like the f55 has. Can you record 4k externally in smaller files than raw from the f5 or are you restricted to 4k raw on sony only media?

it seems the raw recorder is specifically built for raw recording and nothing else. you can always encode that into anything on your computer, prores 4444 log for example.

there maybe options for ki pro quad or gemini in the future annonced before the release of the f5 and c500.

I could always convert raw but it was more the idea of longer record times in the field that I was interested in.

The raw recorder is an optional accessory for either camera, and you can record 4k raw from the F5 using it (priced at ~$6,000).

Sony did mention the ability to output a 4k signal to their yet to be released 4k on-set display. The actual workflow of this I'm not sure of though - the raw recorder only contains a downscaled HD-SDI out. From what I could gather, the display will have an in-built SxS and AXSM reader so you insert your card and play 4k footage off the card. I'm not sure if you can actually output 4k straight from camera to display, though if you can I'm sure you could take advantage of that with an external recorder (assuming also that any 4k output isn't limited to only the F55)

At this stage, only the F55 is announced to be capable of outputting an uncompressed 4K signal via it's quad-HDSDI ports (i.e. capable of recording to a 3rd-party 4K recorder), the F5's only option for 4K output is the RAW recorder.

It's a shame, it sure would be nice to be able to bolt a 4K ProRes/DNxHD recorder onto the back of the camera in the same way the RAW recorder mounts - The SR codec is superb and all, but I'm sick and tired of changing up workflows all the time.

You can use any V mount (or, with adapter, Gold Mount) battery you desire.

You may choose to shoot in SR codec or not. You may stay where you are and not change workflows or determine whether the SR or XAVC codecs offer a level of quality you need which justifies changing workflow.

What do you consider a fair price for SxS media?

And if I don't want to hang a big ole V Mount battery on the back? Something lighter like the Sony batts for the F3. Works just fine thank you very much.

Fair price should at least be the same price for the current SXS media. Not double. And the old cards should then come down in price as well. Normal. Certainly not going to pay $1100 for a proprietary 64 Gb card. (Please don't throw RED back at me either - even more ridiculous as far as I am concerned). Actually, when you can buy a $50 adapter and throw a $125 SDXC (Sandisk extreme 64gb) card into it for the same result as the current SXS cards on the F3 , that tells you even more where things should really be if truth be told.

The thing that has always amazed me about Sony is that you can pay $16k for a camera and they don't even include so much as a power cord with the camera, never mind a battery or a memory card. People can defend this however they want, but sorry, that just stinks.

I think the vast majority of professional would prefer to have V-lock. Cameras like this are likely to need to power additional accessories and V-Locks are more appropriate in this regard. You can get very small and light V-Lock batteries, an IDX Endura 7 weighs only 170g more that a Sony BP-U60, has high capacity and costs less. It is also a professional standard connector used on monitors, transmitters, LED panels, Steadicams etc.. I for one am very glad to see V-Lock used on the F5/F55.

I've never needed a power cord for any of my professional cameras and work solely from batteries. If I needed one, it wouldn't be a major issue to buy one. Most professional produces are sold in this way so that the buyer then chooses what is required. Like many others, I already own many V-Locks and SXS cards, so I don't need them bundled. If other buyers do, they can buy them as required.

I do agree that SXS media is expensive and I would like to see a reduction in price. Having said that, I would rather pay higher prices than compromise my recording media.

Yeh right, which is why Sony wanted to charge me $70 for a power cord for my F3 when I asked. Sorry, absolutely unjustifiable.

i'm having a hard time seeing v-mount as a downside.

or multiple codecs on a single camera, while we're at it.

I don't see where this is notable in the slightest. The F3 takes an industry standard 12 volt 4-pin XLR power input. You can buy a compliant power adapter from a number of vendors if you feel the one Sony offers is too expensive.

As for the suggestion that SxS media should cost the same as SDHC media, this is silly. SHDC media is cheap because it's a consumer standard, and therefore mass produced on a tremendous scale. SxS is a professional format used by far fewer individuals, with greater error protection and reliability safeguards. It's worth noting that when the Sony PMW-EX1 was first released the SDHC cards on the market were not fast enough to handle the bandwidth of XDCAM-EX reliably. Even with the SDHC Class 6 cards only certain SDHC cards were deemed reliable, and there were a number of caveats - they simply didn't perform to the same standard as SxS cards.

With SDHC Class 10 cards and current firmware, it seems plenty of people are very happy with the SDHC adapters for 35Mbps XDCAM-EX recording. It seems likely that for 50Mbps recording this will be a reliable solution as well. But the F5 and F55 will include high frame rate options, as well as codecs with less compression. The F55 will record 4k at 600Mbps. I personally doubt that a Class 10 SDHC card can handle that. And once again - the reason SDHC cards are cheap is because they're mass produced on a tremendous scale, because it's a global consumer standard.

If you want the best, expect to pay for it.

funny thing is, that it's cheaper to go with their new Cards in the raw recorder than with their sxs pro+ cards...
64gb sxs pro plus sell around 1000euros, axs 512gb for 1250euros...
hmm...better go raw then ;-)
