4k bmpcc

I had BMPCC and now BMMCC.. I like BMPCC because of the build in LCD.. is flipout LCD easier to work with? Of course it is..but I can understand BM why not include among other features.. it is extra cost and it is easier to break..so, those individuals whi would like to have it will buy additional LCD and mount it like they want.. I am very suprised and happy what BM included on the new pocket.. Life is not Crismass, and there is no wishlist
Believe me, being originally from Poland- in America life is Christmas and there is a wish list ;-)

You can say that about a lot of countries if you're on the older side (not saying you are)...life has changed drastically within 2-3 generations.

Obviously was much different before that but trying to keep it relative.

Can't really comment on that. Just know what it was like growing up there and living here for a few decades. I do visit Europe almost every year so I think I have a decent current perspective.

Blackmagic heard the call for a flip out screen 1 minute after the livestream. Since then, on every board, they've read about the request for a flip out screen. They got the message. Almost a month later some pot stirrer comes in and complains about a flip out screen again and then goes on about how dumb the company is for not adding it. Thats what this is about. No camps, no apologists. Its been said ad nauseum and people know whatever limitations it has and are still willing to go for the ride and yet there are those that feel the need to explain to them how dumb they are.

I hear you...I'm Polish (and a bit German too) and visited my grandparents every summer from the age of 4-17 in a little town outside of Kielce. I learned how to speak Polish before English (I don't remember learning it) and can speak it fluently until this day.

Spending 3-3.5 months every summer during the early 90s into the 00s and visiting the beautiful country all over brought me some of my best memories. I've seen and learned a lot from a young age; things I didn't understand at the time.

Yep, have been stirring the industry pot since 1987 and proud of it. Guilty as charged haha.. Wasn't it Steve Jobs motto? "Here is to the ....."

Hah..
Every board? No apologists?
Sorry..not true.
But whatever..be happy with whatever

Has anyone heard rumors about the sensor being the same in the Kinefinity Terra 4K ? On a side note, many people think that the Pocket 4K and the Panny GH5s share the same sensor.

Sorry if this has been discussed before, I haven't gone through all the 47 pages.

I'm not entirely sure if it is the same sensor. It is similar but the BMD is 16x9 and the GH5S has a 4x3 sensor. Pretty hard to shave off part of the sensor if it is the same one. Plus the ISO levels have me questioning if they are the same. GH5S uses 400/2500 and 800/5000 for log. The Pocket uses 400/3200. If they are the same sensor why is the dual ISO not the same levels? Why does the Pocket not also use the 800/5000?

Being a similar size and having dual native ISO does not mean the sensors are the same. If they are the same then the raw video from the Pocket would look the same as the raw stills from the GH5S.

Shoot, I didn’t realize GH5s was 800/5000 for vlog.

Is this for sure?

Good thing I haven’t shot much of anything on it yet... but will be tomorrow. I was testing at 400/2500 as base ISOs in vlog. I suppose this means I’ll see a one stop improvement.

Is GH5 base ISO 800 in vlog?

It doesn't matter if it is or if it's not because just sharing a sensor means very little.
Plenty of cameras have shared a sensor already and give drastically different outputs. There is a TON that happens in an imaging system besides just the sensor.
To exaggerate the point a little - it's like looking at two different houses built by two different construction crews and assuming they must be the same because each crew used the same type of hammer.

This.

Why do people make such a big deal about the sensor like it’s some kind of Hemi engine or something? A sensor is just an input device that converts light into electronic numbers. It technically doesn’t even know what the heck kind of bayer filter it just passed through either. It just captures a full array of numbers for each dot and that’s it. It is the processing either done in post with raw or done in camera that make 90% of the look. The color accuracy or the bayer filter and how the camera or metadata in post determine what those numbers mean based on the color of the bayer filter the light passed through can affect accuracy but well made processing can usually deal with that.

Even if the sensors are 100% identical the images could be worlds apart due to the different methods of image processing done on those number values.

I like to think of it as just a box of crayons. You can hand the same box to a four year kid and an established artist and get very different results. Same exact crayons (sensor) but one only hangs on a refrigerator and the other in an art gallery.

To take it further Thomas, why are people in such a tizzy about this camera? I mean, sure, it's a cool little camera for the money but it apparently has lots of limitations and shortcomings as almost all products do. It's not an A camera, possibly a B or C camera, it will eat batteries, it's not that small and it shoots RAW. Neat but 47 pages of posts worth of neat? It's almost like nothing else was introduced or exists from NAB 2018. I don't get it?

It's been a very highly anticipated camera for years...and of course because it's $1295.

(P.S. There are 103 pages on it on BMCuser.)

I agree.

Having said that, it's nice to know what sensor is inside the Pocket as it can give an idea of the final image. I love the images out of the Terra 4K and if it happens to be that it shares the same sensor as the Pocket, it would make me very happy.

Its an A camera for some and a B and C for others. I mean movies are made with iphones now, wedding people are shooting on DSLRs, documentary people use every concievable type, so why box any camera in to a corner. Its a cheap tool (and if you work for your money like I do thats a big deal. Thankyou BM) that offers a quality image. You are free to use it as you wish. Everyone has different needs and ways of working.

I've owned at one point a dozen cameras from every major manufacture. Red, Sony Panasonic, Arri, BM and have modified and dealt with their limitations. And every camera had limitiations in some or several areas. Same with the BM4k. Only this time the cost is considerably less with a (if past BM camera footage is an indicator) better image quality than those previously owned cameras.

I just came home from a set and there was a guy doing the behind the scenes shooting with a canon c300 on a franken rig of epic proportions. There had to be a dozen other company add ons attached to the camera to make the camera work the way he wanted it to work. Does that mean the camera is bad or worthless. He ain't whinning about it, hes out there working with it.

This is a 4k Bmpcc thread so yeah people are posting on a thread about a specific topic for this 'neat' camera beacuse for a very small entry fee the possibilities really excite them with a few people who live to whine and some who whine yet ironically make their lving offering camera modifications. Other threads about other products exist and maybe those products do not have the same effect.

Because it's cheap. Look at a lot of the other threads that have huge page/reply counts. They're usually about dslr type cameras. Heck, this single thread probably has more pages/replies than every thread pertaining to a VariCam, combined.

Yeah except it doesn't really. The sensor doesn’t mean squat for the look you can expect out of the camera. That’s kind of the point we have been making. A sensor just makes numbers. It is the processing that applies most of the look. The sensor determines how many pixels the image can have and the signal to noise ratio it may have and really that’s about it. If a manufacturer completely screwed up on the bayer filter the colors could be slightly off but that’s pretty darn rare these days unless the sensor was built by a complete idiot in their garage. The processing should be able to compensate for any slightly off colors on the bayer filter anyway. For example if the green bayer color has 1% of blue in it the processing can compensate for that when it turns those numbers into pixel values.

The sensor doesn’t make a green dot like we are used to. It just makes an intensity value. The processing knows that intensity is supposed to be a green value and uses that intensity as green. It could be used as any other value however since it’s just an intensity. Think of it like having a black and white image in photoshop that you can tint with a certain color. In this case it does that tint to every pixel as an alternating value. These sensors don’t see color at all. They see intensity.

One of Canon's zillion new patents shows a DSLR with an EVF...maybe there is a future with companies integrating EVFs into smaller hybrid photo/video packages.

https://www.canonnews.com/canon-pat...rates-a-hybrid-dslr-and-quad-pixel-af-sensors

Plus, another note related to "Quad-Pixel" AF. Just when you thought "Dual-Pixel" was enough...Canon is keeping at it with this even though they are having issues with the technology.

But eventually all cameras will have "Terminator Vision", and be able to analyze everything you point them at; people, animals, buildings, vehicles, objects, etc.

Perfect auto-focus at all times...and another step closer to machines taking over these jobs slowly but surely, while experimentation with AI post-production continues and improves.

One may feel that a human's understanding and other aspects of the brain could never be replaced, but they will be replaced in a future world where that won't matter anymore...at least pertaining to entertainment in the form of moving images in a very fast moving world.

Enjoy the Pocket while you still can. :nads:
