4k bmpcc

My opinion is that it's a mix between the BMCC and the Pocket. It lost the sdi out in the process, but gained on many other sides.

Uh, just got a look at this in context with the scale of someone holding it with a lens mounted. How are they calling this a Pocket camera? It looks much larger than I thought it would look. At least GH5S size with the lens mounted. So what's all of the buzz for other than its cheap? Is that it, do people only care about cheap these days? Because Pocket this ain't.

It's named Pocket Cinema Camera 4K because it is the follow-up to the original Pocket Cinema Camera released in 2013. The "Pocket" series isn't a promise to fit a RAW-capable Cinema camera into your pocket, it's the name of their series of small RAW-capable Cinema cameras that cram high performance and features into a compact body at a low price.
And the GH5S is not a Cinema camera, it's a DSLR. No reason to compare the two on size unless you also intend to compare All of their Cinema production related features (Of which IBIS is not a thing - Just figured I'd add that since people seem to jerk off to IBIS nowadays. There's a reason why no professional Cinema camera has this).

Film will only become an art when its materials are as inexpensive as pencil and paper.

As quoted in The Super 8 Book (1975) by Lenny Lipton (ed. Chet Roaman); also in Aesthetic Aspects of Recent Experimental Film (1980) by Barry Walter Moore, Garth S. Jowett, p. 6

Technically it isn't a DSLR either since it doesn't have a mirror. What exactly is the definition of a cinema camera anyway? Seems like a lot of people just throw that term around like professional. A cinema camera is what each person wants it to be. The fact that the GH5 can shoot DCI standard 4096x2160 and true 24p is a robust 10bit format makes it a heck of a lot more cinematic than a lot of other cameras out there. Pretty sure raw isn't the clear definition either. There are a ton of Hollywood movies shots on the Alexa that use ProRes for budget reasons over raw. Are those movies that people pay to see any less cinematic because of that?

Great quote. Thanks for that. I can't wait to see what comes out of the next generation of filmmakers when they don't have to choose between their first car or first camera.

This time is now. Everyone has a phone so the camera is free...

'Pocket' is just a continuation of the branding.

Hundreds of thousands have begged for a Pocket II/BMPCC II for years, and even Grant - during the press conference - said he was asked so much about it every single time he spoke with people, so it was an obvious choice to include it in the name for its familiarity.

Even the first one was never meant to be taken literally. Like, really...what kind of camera is going to fit in a normal pants pocket besides a phone or compact point-and-shoot with a retracting lens.

Even though you could squeeze the BMPCC with a pancake lens if you needed to, its like come on now.

Beautiful. You've got the patience of a saint.

The Arri Alexa is a video camera whilst the GH5 is a digital stills camera with video capabilities. I use Cinema Camera to distinguish the higher end video cameras from the sea of low-end consumer cameras. Nothing to do with what movies people view in the cinemas  My point was that rather than comparing the Pocket4K to DSLR's in terms of size, one should look at the video cameras with similar specs. (That said, I do agree that focus should be on the footage rather than the camera. It's just hard for me coming from big shoulder mounted rigs to read comments complaining about the size of this tiny camera that does so many of the things the Arri and RED cameras do)

I just don't feel I can rely on a BlackMagic camera.... yet. Things like heat vents on the top make me hesitate.

Red also vents from the bottom to the top of the camera. FWIW, I've been using an Ursa Mini 4.6k for nearly two years and this just hasn't been a problem. I've used it on beaches, on mountain trails, in light rain etc and have yet to have any issues related to dust, moisture, etc. Full disclosure, I did have to RMA the camera due to a blown preamp, but BMD replaced it in five days.

Good notes. I can understand having flow through cooling that is environmentally isolated from the electronics. If all of these vented systems are sealed from the electronics, then no worries.

The middle of the body of the URSA Mini (don't know about UMP) is just one big heat sink without any critical components so it's not much of a concern...you'd probably get rain or something in the upwards facing XLR ports if the caps were off before anything, ha. The front sensor block/board/mount/mic and the back power/audio electronics and boards are sealed off.

I have a client who had the audio in blown on one..was told something about susceptibility with swapping or something when phantom power is on.

Yeah, there was a design issue with the preamps from the first generation of Ursa Mini cameras. If you plugged a microphone into an energized port, there was a risk of blowing the preamp. AFAIK, the issue has been fixed.

Yup, that heatsink is a beast!

ROTFL!!!! Wow, that's so funny because my 12 year old son is using one of our extra RED Raven C-cams right now to learn cinematography. So this really resonated with me.
