No, unless this one has changed since Grant mentioned the possible design/appeal to people who operate a camera to film themselves.

It does seem nice, but have to wait and see if it has a bunch of artifacts or IR contamination. If they fixed those problems, then this may just be a GH5 killer in some ways. Price is certainly good for what we think you will be getting.

Can one do simultaneous recording internal and external? If so, can you choose different resolutions/codes?

You can't give some people enough. If this camera had every possible feature, matched the Alexa Mini (yeah, I know that's not possible in this price range), someone would STILL find something that wouldn't be right (or something to complain about). REALLY,.......this thing is $1295 (and Includes Resolve 15)!!!! Blackmagic is pushing the envelope.....!!!!

If it's like other BM cameras then yes.

It should then always output a 10-bit 4:2:2 signal via HDMI and SDI (in this case, no SDI), but the choices will be independent. So you may choose to shoot RAW internally for the best-of-the-best, and then also a back-up of maybe ProRes LT to your VA or Atomos, etc.

No RAW output.

Also...I imagine the only way to be able to shoot 4K in the camera and HD in the recorder is if you can either force the recorder to choose a resolution, or use one that doesn't support 4K recording but does support 4K down-sampling (5" VA, etc).

Blackmagic rep states this camera has dual ISO at 400 and 3200, if this is true and clean, this will be a game changing camera for BM.

I've shot a feature on the first 4K another on Ursa and own a micro am a resolve nut - but I still get frustrated when a whole new sideways form factor pops up.. With no apparent logic just creating another caging challenge.

It would be simple to choose a different form - entirely different from wanting 8k or 1000 fps - things that are clearly complex and costly engineering challenges

The feature set is pretty nice. Thing is, I can get good enough results with a lot of different cameras these days, so what I'm going to buy has more to do with the idiosyncrasies of how I work and what I really need. Right now, my biggest pain point is reliable autofocus that doesn't hunt when using the handheld gimbal. For that reason my next camera will probably be a Sony.

rep says in an interview the battery life could be 20 min, 40, 60, depending on what you're doing.

So basically, abysmal - not going to trump a GHx in that department. But with proper kitting (Hawks Gripper battery comes to mind) could still work very well. Maybe a gripper battery on rails + a mount for a USB C SSD drive plugged into the back.

..all connected with leads that go straight across your face if you didn't snap them off when u took the camera out of your "pocket"

Or you could just spend a "few" bucks and get a bunch of batteries...they are worth it vs. any unnecessary rigging unless you're planning on working with that particular media solution as you mentioned.

Short battery life is nothing new for cameras...higher-end cinema cameras may last 30-50 minutes on one $200-$300 brick battery.

This is a bargain and a small price to pay, especially with so many high-quality 3rd party solutions (you don't need Canon's LP-E6).

I guess there is also long format shooting as noted in another thread, which then you'll have no choice but to get a rig going.

I hear you. Some people see the world half-empty. I think many of us get a certain joy out of pointing out short-comings (me included at times). While I really admire what BlackMagic Design is doing, and as cool as this camera is, I choose the GH5s over this simply because of what PureDrifting said in another thread; I just don't feel I can rely on a BlackMagic camera.... yet. Things like heat vents on the top make me hesitate. But then again, I could buy two of these for the price of a GH5s and have a backup, which one needs on a production anyway.

Who is going to let the $1200 price difference (GH5s) cloud their decision? At this price level, the $$ don't matter that much. Its about image, features, workflow, and reliability. $1200 should not come in to the decision equation.

It is very attractive from a feature perspective so far. My if-only for this camera is timecode-out like the GH5s.

It depends where you come from - that half empty feeling.

My first camera was clockwork with a six month battery for the light meter and had no wires to snag
(It also had a very filmic image)

- ergo snaggy wires or short lived batteries suck :)

Looks like they took the GH5s sensor and made their own GH5 camera.

It definitely looks like they are using the same sensor in the GH5S, which is the Sony IMX294. I posted the following on BMCUser, which I'm copying here:

Based on the specs posted on Blackmagic's website, the sensor in the Blackmagic Pocket 4K has 4.63µm photosites (18.96mm width / 4096 pixels = 4.63µm). That is the same photosite size of the Sony IMX294CJK sensor. Everything else matches as well, such as the same 13 stops of DR, frame rates in 4K and HD, dual ISO enabled, plus it physically looks the same.

Here is Sony's website for the sensor: https://www.sony-semicon.co.jp/produ...x294cjk_e.html

Here is a better breakdown with more numbers and graphs of what the sensor can do: https://astronomy-imaging-camera.com...si294mc-color/

This is also most likely the same sensor in the GH5S, as everything in the GH5S matches that Sony sensor as well. It's been speculated for a while as well: http://www.4kshooters.net/2018/01/06...tarvis-sensor/

Based on the full well capacity and read noise numbers for this sensor, the Pocket 4K is not going to have as good of DR as the original Pocket. The original Pocket had about 14.6 stops of DR. There is, of course, normally a trade off between resolution and dynamic range.

Also, if you want to shoot using Super 16 lenses on the Pocket 4K, a resolution of 2736x1539 (14.53mm) would be about the max size you would get for a lens that doesn't have an image circle larger than Super 16.
