4k bmpcc

It's gonna have to out do the forthcoming cinema module for the RED hydrogen to get me interested. Will definitely check out the specs though. The BMPCC has probably been one of their most successful products. A few years ago, they did a 1/2 price sale and I thought it was already a "has been" camera, but then the price returned to normal and never changed ever after. $1000 forever. I can only imagine they were still selling volume of those to justify the price sitting there for so long, but who knows...

Secondhand the BMPCC has still been selling at a higher price than what the sale price was! Even at $1K new many people still today think that is a decently good deal.

Am hopefully that the BMPCC4K original will push the original BMPCC secondhand prices down low below what their original sale price was. Maybe then I'll pick up a second BMPCC for myself! ;-)

The pocket, shooting RAW, is still the video camera with the most dynamic range you can buy for under ~$5k. That's no small feat for a camera you could buy for $500 four years ago. Let's hope the new one has a slightly bigger sensor and keeps that very sweet dynamic range.

+1 totally agree.
But the other bugaboo - rolling shutter.
First one to the post to get rid of that on a DSLR/Mirrorless is going to get my vote.

Agreed. I've been going through my old DV footage lately and it's the one thing that keeps sticking out to me. No rolling shutter.

Personally I hope this is the new pocket camera in name only. I never understood the need for a pocket sized cinema camera. Maybe as a crash cam? But BMD has other cameras for that now.
I'd prefer something DSLR sized or slightly bigger (PD100/TRV900 sized) with a flip out screen and an EVF built in while keeping the price low.

Assuming this new BMCCC will cost $2k to $3k, why would you want this over, say, a GH5S? If it's $1k to $1.5k, then the answer is obvious. Was the old BM camera manual focus only, I assume? Never used one.

Maybe should called it ccc "Chunkier cinema camera"

BMCPPCC: Blackmagic Cargo-Pants-Pocket Cinema Camera.

I agree with the call for global shutter. What a distinction that would be in this price range!

Some fret that it might compromise dynamic range. But I think Sony has been making global-shutter sensors with decent dynamic range for a few years now. For example, here is one of their newest, with 13.3 stops: https://www.electronicsweekly.com/news/business/new-image-sensors-sony-2017-08/, http://www.sony-semicon.co.jp/products_en/IS/sensor0/img/product/cmos/IMX420LQJ_Flyer.pdf

In my estimate 2020 will be the year when Blackmagic will have Quality Control under control and features properly working without compromise. Nevertheless, I am hopeful that the 4K pocket camera will be good enough. Lets see.

4k raw, Blackmagic color science and likely higher DR. Even if they were the same price, I'd likely choose this over the gh5s if It turns out to be what I think it'll be.

But I already have a 1dc and an a6300, so if it's more than $1500 I doubt I'd be into it. We'll see.

I think it is very similar to GH5 as form factor, let's hope it will have a good autofocus.

That would be a first, wouldn't it? Has BMD every made a camera with goof autofocus?

I asked the Panasonic engineers why they didn't put phase detect autofocus in the GH5S and they basically said that would have killed GH5 sales, it had to be roughly the same, which is "meh" quality, it's not terrible or unusable but it's not DPAF level either.

The higher resolution we keep shooting, the more important autofocus becomes for the majority of users. Sure, if you have ACs, high resolution, sun shaded 7" or larger monitors, you can deal with manual focus. But run & gun, documentary, event work? Manual focus, especially in 4K, is pretty hit or miss, even with peaking, magnification, etc. I don't think the BMPCC will be a big feature or episodic broadcast type camera where you might have ACs, right?

It looks like there's some seams between the box and curved edges. Perhaps something modular? That's what I'm hoping anyway.
