GH5 4k 30p vs 4k 60p

Looking for opinions... Doing my first corporate shoot using the GH5 (coming from the HD camcorder world) and plan on acquiring in 4k for cropping purposes but delivering in 1080p. This is straight corporate stuff without any slow motion needed. Delivery will be on the web and at trade shows on 1080p monitors. Is there any reason to shoot 4k 60p or is 4k 30p more than enough? I've never needed 60p before. I'm assuming the main reason for the 60p option is slow motion effects? Is there something I'm missing?

Thanks.

Thanks. This confirms my opinion as well. It will also save me some money on an Atomos - I won't have to go the Inferno route!

I actually think the 60p does better often and with motion when down sampled from 60p to 30p. There is some interesting math with the higher frame rate in the long gop codecs and less movement between frames. It often shows better usage of the 50% higher bit rate even though you're only going to be using every other frame. Also slowing pans at half speed in a 30p final can make the motion look perfectly smooth for industrial spaces and or environments where there are no people or vehicles in motion to reference the speed. If you ever need to use autofocus, 60p is imperative on the GH5.

Cheers,
Pete

Question for those who have the Inferno and tested this: is the 60p video coming out of the GH5 HDMI of comparable quality to the 10 bit 24/30p 4:2:2 video of of HDMI?

4k 60fps is slightly softer than 4k 30fps.

So if you think the GH5 is too sharp, maybe you should shoot 60fps.

Very wide for sure, but thats not what my 4k tvs show ,just all the detail thats in the clips, like all the many railings that are in some clips and clearly show and obviously could be seen by the naked eye if you were there should not be picked up by the camera.Like i have said i like the GH5 but its not a camera for recording the best detail .

That looks like false edge-sharpened video that overall produces a very artificial looking image.

Yes I'm afraid flinty keeps spouting the same misinformation every couple of months, and even when many folk patiently explaln this concept to him he kind of ignores it and comes back a while later saying the same thing....tis groundhog day

Yes i know its all false not realy there, the colour in that film looks a lot like my RX10iii no where near as good as my GH5 perhaps i am not seeing that correctly though, for films where long zooms are not required the GH5 will do for me but for long range stuff my FZ82 cheapie is best.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FK4v8trpwA4

4k 60P looks awesome and is very sharp. If I compare 4k 30P and 4k 60P in my high end Panasonic 4k TV the 60P looks much better. It is life like and has less noise and of course more natural movements. Autofocus is faster and more precise. It has even more visible color shades because the eye averages gradations 60 times/second compared to 30 or even 24 times/second.

I'm one of the ones who has commented/explained in response to his "problem" and I just watched the film he linked to above. He has a point, whether the "cheaper" camera does better or not is going to be subjective. But what I do see is it looks like the extra/over sharpening of the RX10iii seems to overcome the atmospheric haze softening we often see in extreme telephoto work. Having always been a "sharpness" nut I have to appreciate the "crisp" look he got on the birds in his film.

So if that's what he is after then like everyone else he should use the tool that gets it for him. It's probably possible to "crank up" the sharpness on one of the GH5 profiles and set that to a custom profile so he could get closer to that look with something like the 100-400mm lens, but since he's getting the effect he likes with the RX10iii he already has, all he has to do is pick the right tool for the job.
