420 interlaced(?!), P2 card reader, questions, questions.

Hi guys.
I`ve read the posts for the new HVX200 and find it very interesting. I´m planning to shoot 720 footage with the new news gamma function. Unlike alot of you, I`m not going for the Film Look part of the camera. 24, 25p is not a issue for me.

Question: But why can`t I shoot interlaced video. I understand the spechs are 720 in 60p, 30p and 24p. Or 50p and 25p for the PAL version. Is there something I`ve missed here? You can`t shoot 720 50i with HD- or ....

It seems like most of you are planning to shot HD footage directly to an external harddrive, or onto your laptop or whatever. In my line of work I can`t work with cables. I must have the camera free for everything. And I want to shoot HD, not MiniDV. Therefor the P2 cards is my only alternative. Yes, it`s very expensive. And I would prefer a small 128 GB iPod`ish thing around my arm, connecting to the camera. But the thought of streaming from the camera to my laptop, does not intrigue me. I have to move around the objects a lot, and it would be a nightmare with a FireWire cable. (Have tried this before with my DV cameras.)

My plan is to buy the camera with the two 8 GB cards. When one card is full I´ll give it to my nice assistant who will be transfering the footage over to my laptop.

Question: How long will it take to download 8 GB of 720 HD footage to my laptop? Will my assistent be ready with P2 card#1 before P2 card #2 is full?

Another question: Sorry - I`m new to this P2 card thing. I only know you will need an P2 card reader (?!). What will this thing cost? Who is producing it? Panasonic?
OR - is there another way around?

AND - last question: How many minutes of 720i/50 will the card hold? (IF interlaced is possible.) I`ve read 8 min. of 1080 footage - 20 minutes of 720p/24.

I’m not sure why you’d want to shoot interlaced at all? Between 50p and 50i, all you’re giving up is resolution. The motion rendering will be the same. But 50p will be, at least in theory, up to twice the resolution.

Thanx. I`m new to this HD thing, so I´m learning something new every day.
Does that mean that 1080p has more res than 1080i?! I´ve always thought that interlaced footage had more res. Sorry - I`m not so good with math like thingy.

How about my other questions? Anyone ...

i doubt it will be possible to record straight to harddisk or ipod as is speculated here. so if you do not have shooting breaks then you need 2 cards. it will be quite some time to load 8GB onto a laptop, but it will be quicker than the shooting with the second one will take.

The thing is - I want an interlaced look. I know the 24p/25p thing is popular, but I want the footage to look ultra real, that reality look. What`s the best setting for that? 720 50p? Or maybe 1080i? 720 is more interesting for me, because of P2 card. More rec time.

720 60p or 50p in pal world will give you the reality look. Interlaced or progressive has nothing to do with the real look, images per second does. At 60 the brain does not decern any gaps, reality as seen through your own eyes. 24 leaves some movement to your imagination and helps sell fiction.

Well put, dop16mm ;)

Pros of Interlaced video:
- Saves money for broadcasters by cutting the required bandwidth in half.
- Twice the recording time.

Cons of Interlaced video:
- Un-natural movement perception.
- Even after all this time, a lot of TV's still have terrible interlace playback, including the harsh 'black stripe out' method.
- Playback on progressive equipment (such as computers) will result in a terrible quality of movement in video, or requires de-interlacing that will half the resolution (but there's some great software that can do a fairly good job without losing too much resolution (like http://biphome.spray.se/gunnart/video/) , but only works well for slow movement).

American Idol is shot at 60p. It looks like very good quality video, not like 24p or 30p, which looks more like film. 60p will look just like 60i, only with more detail.

You will have your choice, 1080/50i or 720/50p will both give you the reality look. However, both will take up exactly the same amount of space on the P2 card, so there will be no advantage in record time for one or the other.

Thanx, guys for this good information. Not so many forums (or people) I can discuss this with here in Norway. By the way - is there any Europeans here that know about a EU forum site, like this one?! Can`t find one.

And by the way - how about the P2 card reader. The link between the camera itself and a laptop. I`m not thinking about streaming directly from the camera. Is there any product information, price - or is it on sale already (and have been for the last years ;-)

You don't need one. Your laptop already *is* a P2 card reader. P2 cards are PCMCIA/Cardbus cards. They'll slide right into any laptop's PCMCIA slot.

at NAB Jan was saying that focus would most likely have a firestore for DVCPRO HD. Stick the camera on an Anton Bauer shoulder mount with a 14v Batery along with a firestore.

Or cary a P2 reader on your belt. Transfer rate was reported at a gig a minute. Between two cards, you should be able to work more or less continuously.

Also this camera shoots interlaced from what I understand. 1080i and 480 60i.

Feroxfilm why looking for just an EU forum? Here are people for all over the world with different systems. if you are looking for PAL world, even in Australia they use it. I really like the information being share by world community.

And then there´s the other thing, to limit posts to one region wont help you to learn so much because there will be less people to chat with... It happens i started just in Spanish forums and since i reached here, well, i visit the "little" ones to keep updating them of what happens in the rest of the world. I love this place.

Don´t worry Feroxfilm... If this forum is full of europeans it´s because of something...

You have a point mr.guiyotinne! Just curious about what other forum there is.
I really love this place. But I`m really looking forward to "HVXuser.com" :-)
