40mm Hexanon 1.8

In case any of you were curious about a niche lens, shot this whole video with just the 40mm 1.8

Soft at 1.8 so I kept it at 2.8 rest of the night. It glows at 1.8 and got a huge step down ring to block flare/glow which makes a big difference (thought the step down ring wasn't used on the lens for this video)

Usually they come up under $50 on ebay. Just wanted to try something wider than 50mm to reduce the no IS jitters.

That's why I sold mine. Wide open it is soft and has too much internal diffusion. Also the somewhat unpleasant bokeh.

Yep - did you ever try the step down ring trick? Still there are better lenses sharper wide open by an extra stop in the same price range, but was surprised how drastic a step down ring changed the image. I'll give it credit, closed down/outdoors you get razor sharp and great color, but 2.8 and above is not why you buy a prime lens.

What might be a better choice for a 40mm prime? I'm finding it to be a really versatile focal length but also find the Hexanon a bit soft wide open.
