These are some grabs from my first paid shoot using the gh13. Loving this patch! mostly shot at 1/125, iso 100 and wide open at f1.4. naturalistic lighting with 5600k fluorescent bulbs or just a reflector or negative fill. used the 'dynamic' setting with sharpness at -2, saturation and contrast at +2. Just thought others might like to see some real-world samples of the hacked camera at work! :thumbsup:

the grabs look amazing, ive hacked my camera but have had a lack of interesting things to shoot, may can i ask you experiance with the film modes? ur pref film modes and settings? and why? :) ive never really played about with dynamic but it looks really good for a docu style.

i shot mjpeg with the nostalgic mode, but really didn't like how soft and washed out the image was. some people recommend that mode for the 'film' look and supposed increased latitude.

for this shoot, the director wanted a crisp clean look that pops...and yet still looked natural and not over-produced. we liked the 'vibrant' and 'dynamic' styles for their higher saturation and contrast. the gh1 film styles seem equivalent to the hmc's gamma + matrix scene file settings.

our B-cam was an hvx200 shooting with CineV scenefile. i knew the gh1 would be sharper, so we had the hvx behind the gh1 several feet and zoomed in to get the closeups. this allowed it to more closely match the dof. the grabs below are all 'raw' and uncorrected. you can see that all we need to do is add some sharpness and a little extra contrast and saturation to match the two.

Yeah they look good. That Panasonic "Mojo" makes it easy to match the HVX and GH-1 together.

I was one of the folks who was recommending Nostalgic mode for that film flat look. But I've since backed off. I realize I didnt like what it was doing to highlights...blowing them out. So far it's been Standard setting for me....but I think I'll try the same ones you did.
 
the panny mojo was a big part of the reason we wanted to shoot with the gh1 over any of the canons. we're all hmc/hvx folks and we knew they'd mix well. i have to say i've also really enjoyed shooting with the gh1. very easy/almost intuitive to use coming from the hmc and hvx. the canons and nikon were frustrating. so this experience was a +1 on both counts! =)

i want to try the vibrant mode next. little less contrasty (although i love's me some contrast!), but still well saturated. if you happen to do any testing comparing the dynamic style through different settings (-2,-1,0,+1,+2 sat, ctrst, etc), i'd love to see it. i still don't own a gh1 and can't test for myself until i rent again. i'm looking to buy though so if anyone knows anyone.... ;)
 
Congrats on the great work you did in-camera color matching the GH1 to the HVX200. Choosing the best Film Mode and settings is very important since the GH1's compressed color depth is at best 8 bits. When set up properly, the camera can do a much finer job of color grading the 12-bit color depth of the sensor's Bayer filter than can be done with the compressed video in post-production.

i put both cams on 5600k for all but the hospital room shot.
for that one we manual WB'd the hvx then simply dialed the gh1's WB temp until it looked the same on the lcds. it was quick and very easy to do. i wanted both to match so that any CC in post would produce consistent results. i wasn't sure that manual WBing to the same white card would actually create the same color temp between the two cameras (i hadn't actually tested that yet).
on that note, i'm impressed with how accurately the gh1 lcd reflects what i see on my 22" 1080p lcd in the office. it helps a lot to be able to know exactly what you're capturing! =)
 
i think the hvx in cine v looks pretty badassed.... :)

gh13 looks so similar. very cool.

so do i! =) the hmc150 can produce the same results.
the key difference on this set was that if we wanted to get those mid shots with shallow dof, the hvx would've been a lot further back. fortunately, we had room to spare in the fire house and could've done it if we didn't have the gh1. on any other set with little space to work in, this simply would not have been possible. and while we wanted the hvx as a backup to the gh1 in case we screwed something up, we thought we might as well get a closeup while we were at it to give us some options in post. plus i knew that the hvx would match up better zoomed in. we were very conscious about trying to bring together the sweet spot of both cameras.

both of these cameras are rock stars, but it really is the attention to lighting that makes these shots sing. ;)
 
Great info there and it's nice to see something other than nature shots. It's pretty and all, but it doesn't get a lot of work.
