4 Days with the Sony NEX-FS700

If I wasn't tempted before, I am now.

Also, why do I have this feeling that we're about to see an explosion of over-used super slo mo everywhere we look. Kind of like to ultra shallow DOF the dslr's brought.

Digging those magic hour surf shots. The dog shots were fun too. This camera is shaping up to be an all-around beast.

man...... I keep telling myself I don't need this.... then I keep seeing how well the fs700 handles highlights. I swear to god I'm about to throw my FS100 at a wall because every now and then I end up with ruined shots because for some reason sony thought plastic highlights was an excellent look to bake into the camera asdklhfasldjkfahsd

Either that or I'm retarded and really can't master picture profiles.

Fantastic! What a camera! Perhaps the new 5D for film makers?
Yeah, we'll see a lot of slo-mo, but only because we've never had the ability to do so until now.
But also give much credit to the practiced and talented eye of Mr. Young.

What are your knee settings? I find lower than 100 is a great way to generate plastic people...avoid it!

+1.

GREAT demo. I'm liking what I'm seeing. Looks noticeably sharper than the FS100, and highlights do look better. I'm still waiting for someone to shoot a character wearing a red shirt or jacket, but the reds in this demo do look under control. Except for the goofy ergonomics of the EVF/LCD, this is likely to put some pressure on Canon for sure. I just hope they add a waveform to the EVF before they go to production.

Does anyone know what that knurled ring between the main body and the lens control section does?

BTW, the demo is a nice plug for Birger too. I'm holding my breath of course, in anticipation of the release of their EF adapter (lol).

Super demo.

As lovely as it was I don't think I would use slo-mo that much but would definitely hire the FS700 if a job called for it.

I think after the underwhelming DSLR releases and Canon wanting to play at a higher price point, people will be taking another look at the FS100 and FS700.

There are rumours of a Canon C100 but if real I can't see it competing on price/performance with either Sony cam.

Yes, I am buying this. I had about $7K to spend, which I was saving for a Canon (who failed miserably), so what another few thousand dollars more for something that is more future proof.

I have 4 questions for you lucky folks who have used this camera.

1) Does the continuous Autofocus ONLY work with Alpha lenses? I'm going to be using mostly Canon lenses with either the Metabones adaptor or the Berger. Will the L-Lenses do continuous autofocus as well? Seems like something Metabones could do since they seem to have great coders writing their firmware.

2) How much heavier is the FS-700 than the FS-100? The reason I ask is that my Glidecam 2000 (which works great with the FS-100 2.3 lbs bare) might be over the max weight limit if the new camera is more than 3 lbs just body / bare

3) Also, do you know if the FS-700 has crop modes? That would fantastic. If not, I hope Sony can include this in a firmware update.

4) Any idea when the EOS to Sony Birger mount is coming out? I heard the Metabones is great, but it would be nice to have some competition.

Thanks for this great intro video. I am SOLD! So sold and excited.

Moral of the story for Canon. See what happens when a company (Sony) releases something great? Huge rounds of applause as opposed to overpriced, moderate feature upgrades like all the new Canon :( I would say this is the most revolutionary video camera since the 5D2 (which was an accident).

This camera has the best image quality and functions at it's price point and with the prospect of upgrading to 4k makes this camera THE DON

Great video review and footage, thanks for this. It's a shame the camera doesn't have timelapse capability, the FS100 doesn't either correct?

I'm hoping that the LA-ea2 / a mount glass combo autofocus works as well on the fs100 (after f/w update) as it appears to on this cam.
:-)

Whilst i'm sure it is sharper (and i trust what Frank and the others who are seen it up close say) i really don't see how people are seeing this in 720p videos. I'm looking at FS100 footage shot last week and, well people are moving in it, it's as sharp as it needs to be really. If resolution charts are your thing i'd like to see a side by side. 1080p uncompressed stills please.

I suspect that right now you could shoot FS100 and put it up on vimeo and say it's FS700 and people will comment on the sharpness. Yes i am that cynical.

For the alpha mount/auto focus lens question: yes that will only work with sony/minolta alpha mount lenses. That's the LA-EA2 adapter offering that functionality. I'm hoping that this functionality is rolled up into the FS100 firmware update next week. If not, then that might be a reason to upgrade in itself because as much as i love manual focus i'm not so proud to not suggest having AF on my sony zeiss lenses last friday would have been very useful and probably saved a few takes.

cheers
Paul

From pictures I've seen of the FS700 on set, the camera's monitor does have crop modes. This will also be available to the FS100 when the firmware update is released.

NO ! it's NOT correct" both FS-100 and FS-700 HAVE timelapse capability.. you can shoot with 1 fps, 2 fps, 4 fps, 8fps, 16fdps and up to 30/60 fps in FS-100 and up to 240fps in full resolution in FS-700 ..
