4 channels of audio?

so as I understand it, the HVX200 allows for 4 CH of audio in DVCPRO50 & DVCPROHD modes? does that mean instead of choosing between int or XLR mics, as on the DVX100, you can record the int mic to CH 1 & 2 and XLR to CH 3 & 4? if so that would be amazing, constant ambient sound in addition to specific sound, all synced up.

I guess (and hope) you can rout the XLR inputs to channels 1+2 and the RCA inputs to channels 3+4, connecting even more microphones (using an external preamplifier or an external mixer).

Yeah the RCA's would be cool.. however logically if your using 4 mics you would just use a mixer on the XLR inputs instead of the RCA's.

And as far as I know Barry is right, 1 and 2 are XLR and 3 and 4 are INT.

One huge advantage to the RCA's is that it would give you a 4 track recorder... useful with dialog if you want each mike on a seperate track so you could decide the dialog mix levels later in post as opposed to in the field... ala Robert Altman...

Yeah, but wouldn't it be nice if you can record 4 channels separately and without a mixer?

Does anyone know what this will do to the data rate?

Does anyone know what this will do to the data rate?

That is, in what modes and at what data rates will 4-channel recording be available?

25Mbps DV won't handle 4 tracks of 48/16; does anyone know how DVCPRo deals?

DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO-HD both support 4 (or more) channels. DVCPRO50 does 4 channels, DVCPRO-HD does 8.

Although -- hmmm... that's actually an interesting question. DVCPRO25 and DV both do support four channels, in 32-khz 12-bit mode. I wonder if the HVX will support 4 channels under those circumstances? That'd be pretty cool...

Well, I dunno... I personally would have use for 4 channels of 48/16, but not 32/12. As far as I understand, DVCPRO50 supports 4 channels of 48/16, and DVCPROHD supports 8 (where DV/DVC25 supports 2). I guess my question is, does DVCPROHD always include a fixed ~6Mbps of audio data (8 tracks), and DVCPRO50 a fixed 3Mbps, or can you choose to reduce/rededicate that bandwidth?

I mean, I guess it's only about 6% of each format dedicted to audio... though with the variable data rates of DVCPROHD (e.g., 40 Mbps for 720p/24), it gets close to 15%. I can certainly tolerate that, but it seems like it will go to waste in the vast majority of cases.... terabytes of blank audio tracks across the world...

32/12 is only applicable to DV and DVCPRO25. In DVCPRO-HD and DVCPRO50 it's always 48/16.

AFAIK, that's a fixed allocation that never changes, at least as far as tape goes.

P2 may be a whole different story. With P2 they write the audio files and the video files separately. They're not attached and interleaved. So that leaves open the option that they may only write the tracks that they need, so perhaps there will be no wasted space. Can't verify that until we get some HVX-shot footage, but I'm suspecting that they'll take advantage of the space savings. I mean, on tape there's no way to avoid recording all 60 frames in 60p, but on P2 they drop the unnecessary duplicate frames. Can't see why they wouldn't do the same thing for the audio.

Are you saying that by using stereo (vs. 4 channels) will save storage space on the P2 and affect (slightly) the available recording time?

No, I'm saying that I *hope* that's how they've implemented it. As in, I hope they take advantage of the P2 architecture to make sure they're not recording unnecessary empty data (i.e., four tracks of DVCPRO-HD audio that you can't actually get to). It wouldn't make much difference, maybe a total of 3mbps, but hey, especially in the early days when storage capacities are lower, obviously you'd want to get as much as you can.

I'm saying that I do not know factually, one way or the other, but having been a programmer for many years I can see that it would be a very easy thing to do, and seeing as how they made space-optimization possible in the 720p mode (by not recording unnecessary duplicate frames) then I will go on record and assume that they will make similar space savings available due to not recording unused audio tracks.

As for what you specifically asked (stereo vs. 4-track saving space), it wouldn't make that much difference -- you're talking about 1.5mbps. They may have a menu option for 2-track or 4-track, but if not, no great loss. I'm just more concerned with the idea of them not wasting P2 card space recording all 8 tracks of DVCPRO-HD audio, when only 4 are accessible.

hack the inputs for 4 channel?

hack the inputs for 4 channel?

It seems that there are no rca inputs on the prototype I've seen. Does anyone know if they're hidden somewhere?
Do others speculate how to turn the inbuilt mic cables inside the house into a feed from e.g. microports via a physical modification, and then use the xlr's for high quality mics?

kind regards, soren

In reality, if you have that many professional mics on set then you have a professional sound guy on set as well and he's putting everything through a mixer and going into a nagra or dat so the audio post guys have the best possible sound to work with.

The only thing the onboard mics are good for is abient noise like traffic and such. I wouldn't count on them for anything else.

They're behind a cover on the right side of the camera, in the region between the hand grip and lens. You can see them with the cover removed in this photo:
