4-cam comparison -- initial response

I like to think that most of us are artists and not techheads trying to justify our purchases with spec talk.

Based on all the threads around here I'm not too sure you're right about this. :-)

But I agree with you, at this point I think any of these cameras will do the job for people who have talent, can tell a story and are good in post.

Technical note: Even a well lit scene has shadows and black areas. So if the noise there is uglier in one camera than the next it's worth taking a good hard look at.

For "tweaking after the fact," these are far from moot points.

Yes, but each codec has their own set of problems.

For DVCPROHD
Memory hog
lack of any real PC support (real=native Vegas)
Storage issues
Capture cost (p2)

For HDV
Bad 4:2:0 colorspace
Dropouts
Capture & Log
6-15 GOP

Finally I can agree with Isaac Brody. The thing are going in a good direction. And I will stop trolling too. By the way I've just received M2 Micro 35mm lens adapter from Texas and playing with it now. It's a night here in Vienna and I will do the first testing tomorrow. Have a look on the picture below and hope that during a year I will add HVX200E to my HD acquisition set up.

SJ,

Congrats on that. I'm thinking of buying that as well as their foucus assist. Review will be greatly appreciated. Also do you think handheld stuff is possible with that setup w/o the matte box?

I was one of the first to own an M2 and must say they are excellent. I am also high up on the follow Focus list from Redrock and that should be ready very soon, at a price less than $500.

The M2 gives super results, and the new GG is really excellent, with no ghosting at all and a sharp image. I also have the Vocas matte Box, so my setup is almost identical to SJUser, who i am sure will have some great fun with it over this weekend.

Thanks for the insightful post.

I've waited for a long time for something like the HVX200: it is good enough for what I want to do, at a price I can afford.

Something better will always be around the corner, and those who want better can wait. But until then, you will create nothing.

My waiting is done. It is time to create.

I say this out of a sense of urgency. A friend of mine recently discovered he has Parkinson's disease. If you got a dream, go for it now, while you have the chance.

All the thing together is pretty heavy, getting you out of your balance and leaning you forward, also with Fig-Rig you should have very strong arms muscles to carry it longer and to keep the focus to follow. Also I research for a couple of follow focus options, one is of course is RedRock future follow focus and one is from Canada titled Universal Follow Focus that also has additional set of gears that all fit to Nikkor lenses and more...

But I would recommend shooting with adapter that only using tripod at the moment. I know that Chrosziel has one rig that should fit to the shoulder mount but I have to find a good one. Still searching and my pocket is empty at the moment. Also I would suggest use of Fig-Rig when you shoot without adapter using fixed cam's Zeiss or Leica lens. I am not giving up this option at all. It is just one more lens to add in the collection. But we are now far away from the topic of this tread. I stop now to make digression using the other topics.

There is no thick/thin when in 1080 mode. That only applies to 480.

Barry,

I figured since it was a 1080i, it still used some of the interlace smoothing technology.

Barry,

Is it still good to say your percentage numbers still stand that 1080p has a 25 to 30% more detail over 720p?

Haven't compared them from the recorded footage yet. I am assuming that the % numbers will hold, but I'll know more once I look at the recorded footage.

Thanks a ton to DVXuser, Barry and the team. We are eagerly waiting for the report.
My only consern is this

Output of which camera is best bet for film transfer or reverse telescene? (I dont mean film look)

I hope to see a clear answer for this in the reporrt.

When you analyze the footage, any chance we can get some uncompressed frames from the tape/P2, to break down chroma/luminance performance as well?

I would just like to point out, that had anybody listened to my advice about 2 weeks ago to simply ignore everything SJUSER said, this forum topic would have been about 10 pages shorter.

Bravo, and probably your BRAIN would get shorter/smaller too.

Before we can see 4-cam comparison test results I would like to remind you again on the film-like quality of FX1/Z1.

Again? SJUSER, we know you love your FX1. It's a great camera for its price. But instead of writing about it again and again, how about shooting some stuff and post it in the proper forum? That's the best way to show everyone how great the camera can be.
