C100: 4.5 hrs recording C100 + Ninja Blade with SWIT 8082S V Lock battery

Hi Ben,

Thanks for your advice before. I was wondering if you could talk us through your rig there. I'm interested in the quick release plate. I have a Zacuto studio baseplate- would that be compatible with something like this? Also the rods you have there that protrude front and back of the rig. What length are they? My baseplate will only hold one set of rods

I guess I just don't trust a hot shoe for something like this.

I will probably go with the Wooden Camera UVF Mount LCD Kit.

Seems to be a more rugged option.

Hi Saf.

Bear at with me , I'm away at the mo, but will give you a more comprehensive answer when I return.

Cheers.

Here are some updated pics. I've fine-tuned the setup during use over the last few weeks. i've added the Zacuto relocator and swapped the longer rods to the front, to make it more balanced. The battery can quickly slip back and forth easily to counterbalance different-sized lenses.

This setup uses a Tilta baseplate/shoulder mount. I wanted to get as near as I could to ENG ergos - and it's not far off. It has more heft, so shots have more smooth inertia, but it's not too heavy for me to confidently carry the whole thing on the C100 handle. The Zacuto studio base plate will take their "zeddie wedgie" which would then allow you to attach to a VCT base plate - but you might be better with the Canon TA100, which doesn't have a rear tensioner. On the other hand, Zacuto have various tripod interface options.

The rods are 200mm at the front and 100mm at the back.

Thats a lot of weight to put on a flimsy hot shoe mount.

Especially when it is cantilevered out towards the front like that.

Actually, it's very light - there's no battery, just a lightweight dummy power adapter. Around 350-400 grammes total. Also, the pic is a little deceptive - it doesn't go as far forward as it looks.

Ben.

really am looking for something like this which you can hold on your shoulder for several hours
I'm doing a lot of concert filming handheld on stage, and even if I really like the ergonomic of the C100, when I have to give the director a good shoot for all the concert, my back is at the end crying because of pain. I didn't have those issues with a sony PMW-350 or any other ENG shoulder cam.

so, about that tilta shoulder baseplate, which model is it ? is it made specifically for the C100/C300 or its just the same for all cameras ?

thanks

Thanks a bunch Ben!

So let me get this right.. you have 200mm rods at the front attached to a studio baseplate, the baseplate is mounted on a tilta shoulder support and baseplate which is fitted with a 'zeddie wedgie' which enables it to mount to vct baseplate? also what model battery plate are you using? and how have you managed to secure 100mm rods at the back? i'd ideally like to use my studio baseplate with a z wedge attached and buy a TA100. Out the back of the studio plate i'd like to have shoulder pad and battery plate. forgive me if i'm being naieve or asking stupid questions!!

It's a TILTA BS-T03:

For any camera.

Bear in mind:

- You'll need a VCT U14 plate (http://cvp.com/index.php?t=product/sony_vct-u14) on which to mount it (don't cheap out with a VCT U14M or Chinese clones - the tolerances have to very accurate and only the Sony VCT U14 works properly in my experience.)

- It will need some kind of counterweight or V Lock battery to get the balance right. I recommend a V Lock if you're running a Ninja Blade - batteries on the back of that make it bulky and heavy on this setup.

Not quite - the Tilta is a combined baseplate and shoulder mount with rod mounts front and rear. What I was saying to you in the earlier post was to reflect the fact that you already have the Zacuto Studio baseplate.

In your shoes, having made that investment in the studio baseplate, I'd probably be looking at a Zacuto shoulder option and tripod interface.

Otherwise, the Tilta plus VCT-U14 is a sizeable investment, when you're already half way there - my opinion.

Hope that makes sense!

Hi Ben,

Thanks for all your help so far, my rig is really coming along and i'll be able to post a proud picture soon enough. Just another question.. What are you using as a dummy battery on the back of your atomos? Is it a d-tap connection or does it run to DC?

Thanks

Saf
