3rd 48 Hour video

This is the third 48 hour my group and I have done for Bowling Green State University and what I believe to be our best work.

I have a couple of gripes with the finished product. 1. There are few too many unneeded F-bombs..
2. Although funny in a regular guy to guy conversation, there is one joke I find a little too crude for the video and feel like it narrows our audience, but at the same time the shot was so critical so we couldn't cut it out. At the time of filming I was so exhausted from not sleeping that it really didn't even strike me as bad until editing...oh well just something I'll have to deal with.

-Canon 7D
-1080 24p
-Stock Audio (was pretty good to me besides some wind noise which we killed the really bad stuff in post a bit and layered audio on top of it anyways)
-Tamron 17-50 2.8 definitely would have been nice to have a faster lens for some of the less lit scenes, but we worked with what we had.

I was DP and edited a a little bit of the film. I had one of my buddies edit the rest and I put the finishing touches on it.

Music was created, in logic, by my buddy who also edited.

Can anyone also explain their export settings as well? I mean I feel like the footage looks pretty good, but not up to it's full potential.

Anyways enjoy! Constructive criticism is encouraged please!! I would love comments to help me improve!

PW is losgatos (Private until it shows on campus on wednesday)

Couple of things. The first girl death is like a prelude to the story yet it goes for 2 and a half minutes. too long IMO, Id cut that to moments. Then we get in the apartment with the guys and they fart around getting stoned for what seems like forever, thats got some funny snippets. Id cut it back to those.

When the guy is dead in the bath, his wound looks pretty good, but overall the blood is rather watery, not just here but throughout it. And when the other guy runs from the bathroom, I find it hard to believe he wouldnt have seen the killer standing in the middle of the room, yet he seemed to walk straight into a smash to the face. Wonder if theres something there you could do, maybe cut to black when he is smashed rather than try to show the perspective shot.

Now in some basement with a freak, this could have been the part where you could have really made it interestingly funny.

I understand this was done as a comedic slasher, but just think it would have been a little bit more fun if the jokes involved action moments while they were being chased by the slasher etc rather than them just sitting around.

Also, are there no copyright rules? There certainly is copyright law - which precludes you from using an unlicensed Smashing Pumpkins song over your credits.

Thank you for the comments Noel. I take them whole-heartedly. I agree with what you're saying. Alot of the stuff you mention is due to time restraints and obviously college budgets. Like the bath tub the blood in the water is just food coloring. The fake blood we had made did not look good enough in the water so we just used food coloring.

I do agree with the whole thing about him just walking into the killers shovel towards the end, we probably could have moved him in closer so as soon as my friend turned around he was right there. These were the last scenes we were shooting and it was 4am and every was sleep deprived so we just tried to bang them out as quick as possible. Not trying to make excuses, but when you're super tired and have time restraints you think less.

I also agree with the cut to black instead of the POV after he gets hit. I actually re-watched it today and was thinking the same thing. I might re-cut the film and tighten it up as you've mentioned.

The film was also supposed to have some comedic elements, but not entirely be comedic. Like the joking around just as most college kids don't take things very seriously. But the first killing and the second, I don't know how obvious it was but the guy outside smoking got whacked as we tried to imply by him not being there in the outside shot looking in and when the killer stomps out his cigarette, Thus were supposed to be serious parts. The end was supposed to be serious too, maybe a little funny at first, but then we were going for a "WTF, this is messed up" kind of reaction.

There are no copyright rules in the festival, but correct me if I'm wrong, can't you use up to 30 seconds of copyrighted music without being in violation of the law? This is my understanding and if so we were about 3 seconds over on the credit...Whoops.

But thank you so much for the criticism, Obviously being in school I want as much feedback as possible to better my work!

I agree with Noel. Little slow in the beginning and with the stoners. There was a green cast on some of the footage in the basement as well. Guess I've never heard the 30 sec rule. Go with music you have rights to just to be safe.

Alright yea, the 30 second rule is what i've heard from older students on campus and I feel like a professor has mentioned it so that's what i've been going by.

But thank you for watching and giving me some feedback.
