3D camera question

I'm sure I'm in the wrong spot in this forum for this question but it does say the other cameras. I have a short five minute film and would like to shoot it in 3D. It seems to me that 3D is different then the old days. In the old days tons of things would come flying out at you but now a day it seem to just give you some real depth. Anyway has anyone on this forum shot in 3D? What camera would be the best to use (rent) and can I edit on Vegas Pro? Thanks

You have not given a budget. A place to start is to look at this 3D camera: Sony HXRNX3D1U

There is a consumer version, the Sony TD10, which is considerably cheaper. Same video specs; but does not do 24p in 3D video.

I can positively tell you that Sony Vegas Pro 10 (e) is designed to edit 3D (not versions below 10), inclusive of the 3D video from the above 3D camcorders.

the TD10 and the Nx3D1 are rock solid 3d camera when it matter to deliver 3D.
Unfortunately, the TD10 is shooting only in a mode (1080i50 or 60)that is not compatible with 3D MVC Blu-ray (1080p24) so ,if you intend to deliver professional product you will need to spend a bit more money on the nx3d1
that is the reason why i jumped from TD10 to NX3D1 and why i have a TD10E for sale at low price (apparently hard to sell back , even new) , despite i am very happy with this camera.
On the other hand if you can skip the blu-ray media (playing movie from a PC, for example), you would make a substantial (about $1000) economy by choosing the TD10 and at the same time avoid the 24p thing that some people find a bit jerky
You can also choose to still use blu-ray with TD10 but forget about MVC encoding and use side by side (or top-bottom).
The biggest limitation going that way is the disc would not be compatible 2D/3D as usual 3D commercial blu-ray but also it can be an advantage to be played even on non-3D blu-ray player (as long the TV set is 3D capable) and at any frame rate or resolution .
SBS or top-bottom can even be stored on DVD, but to deliver a convincing 3D, high resolution is mandatory, unless you plan to go only on youtube 3D or small devices like 3D smartphones.

The TD10E (european model or probably also used in new-zealand) is an exception since it shoots at 1080i50, that can be deinterlaced to 1080p25, then interpeted as 1080p24. The 4% would be hardly noticeable.
Only reserve is, deinterlacing is always introducing artifacts, and if this could be ok in 2D, it would be probably problematic in 3D.
If you choose top-bottom, you could even skip a field and get 2x 1920 by 540 stacked.
As you can see, options look numerous but this bottleneck created by the blu-ray specification is really a limitng factor, considering it double the price of the camera.

Hey guys thanks for your info. I don't have a huge budget since we all know short films don't go anywhere but I thought about shooting this in 3D and then submit it to Sundance but not sure if Sundance or any other film festivals would except a short 3D film? I don't know anything about shooting in 3D but was thinking if I shot it in 3D could I have it in 2D in case no one wanted it at the film festivals?

NOSYS70 - Where do you have your camera listed for sale? PM me if you get a chance.

Again thanks.
