Gizmag claims the upcoming 3840x2160 "QuadHDTV" LCD display from Chi Mei Optoelectronics will be officially showcased this year at Cebit 2006. CMO, the fourth largest LCD manufacturer according to Mercury Research and DisplaySearch, claims the display features a resolution four times that of current 1920x1080 High Definition LCD displays. The 56" panel uses 24.9 million subpixel (for a combined total of 8.3M pixels) and requires multiple digital inputs to display 2160p -- the equivalent of watching full motion video from 8.4 megapixel frames.
The display boasts a 600 cd/m^2 luminance with a true 8-bit color depth. Thirty-two backlights are needed to light this behemoth with an advertised contrast ratio of 1000:1. The V562D1 panel uses a VA display mode variant.
The push for a higher resolution display is actually a move instigated by the corporation CEO, claiming that "From now on, all LCD manufacturers must shift to increasing the consumer experience on LCD display by using greater screen resolution and more advanced technology." For those of us who have always asked why laptop displays have a higher resolution than desktop displays, it looks like CMO may start answering our prayers. The company already has a reputation for high resolution IPS displays designed for the medical industry, but never in volume.

Westinghouse demonstrated the CMO display at CES 2006 as part of a prototype demonstration, but come Cebit CMO will actually announce the model to all of its manufacturing partners. CMO previously made claims that the display was in the works back in September of 2005 but failed to produce a public display until CES. The official site specification just went live a few days ago and still does not seem to be complete."

looks like the pieces are starting to fall into place :)

yeah we were talking about that viewsonic monitor in the Footage post.. its a very nice display.

The important thing about all this is that the market is moving to higher resolutions already, and thats nothing but a good thing.
