36fps

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to achieve the same affect for slower motion, that can be achieved in film by shooting 36fps and then slowing it down to 24fps, a technique often used for music videos.

I want to shoot the song at a faster speed, and then slow it down in post for the actual speed.

If I want to achieve the same affect via the A1, and since I can only record 24fps with it, what should I do to avoid any unwanted "strobes" or blurs that might occur from the time stretch? Would using a faster shutter speed help?

Appreciate your help!

I think a higher shutter speed would help. Although it's very difficult to do frame rate conversion to 36 fps from 24f since the extra informations isn't there. The program would have to interpolate the extra frames and it wouldn't look very good. I wouldn't shoot 24F. Shoot 60i, deinterlace and slows down 40% in a 24fps timeline, it would look much better. There's pretty much no good way to get increments slow motion with the A1.

So that means I would have to deinterlace all the footage and render it out before I even start editing? Wouldn't it hurt the quality?

Twixtor has a very high learning curve, requiring lots of trial and error (honestly, RevisionFX doesn't provide enough tutorial support for it). I have the plug-in and after many frustrating attempts I'm still unable to produce satisfactory results. Eventually it's was just easier to do slow motion the way I described above. Other people probably came up with better results than me, but doing 60i was definitely the simplest way.

Even with Twixtor I wouldn't recommend shooting 24F. You always want to have the most picture information before doing any kind of interpolating for slow motion. 60i has the most motion information, allowing you to deinterlace to 60p without a huge loss in resolution. There's not much you can do with 24F or 30F. Another reason is that the A1 has a leg up over the competitors in term of resolution in 60i mode, so that will help you even more.

I'd shoot 60i and convert to progressive, then use Twixtor or ReTimer or Algolith to intelligently map frames to approximate 36 fps converted to 24 fps slight slowmo.

Or just shoot 30F and do a very slight Twixtor slowdown.

Not to cause a problem in the A1 forum, Much respect to everyone here but.... Try renting a HVX for a day. Costs half of Twixtor pro and it will do it immediatly no work in post. Twixtor is finicky, it causes weird wobbles when objects cross frame.
