what exactly was that "non-upres" HD image captured with?

Are they trying to tell me that they captured an HD image with the DVX? A camera that does have enough pixels on the CCD's to actually capture at HD resolution.. or are they blowing smoke up my ass....?

impressive pictures indeed.. but it all seems a little fishy to me..

their website is sorely lacking on proper comparisons.. the scant information alone doesn't fill me with confidence...

interesting none the less..

Loki, they're using pixel shift. Kind of like treating the 3 CCDs as one CCD with Bayer Interpolation.

Yep and because of the pixel shift their only really getting a 4:2:2 image (although they are capturing uncompressed). This isn't bad of course, just one of the minor downsides to using pixelshift to get HD.

OK...I guess I'm a dumbass, but I don't understand. Are you saying these guys are getting HD footage 4:4:4 from the DVX100A? If so, how is this possible? Or is it just REALLY good uncompressed SD footage? Please explain a little more about what *exactly* is happening. Thanx!! ~reservoir~

It's basically just pixel-shifting the green channel. Google it and there will probably be an explanation, but it's basically the same as Bayer interpolation, I think, only for three single color ccds instead of one three color ccd with three colors of photosites.

They're using pixelshift to get an HD image.

There are two things this camera can do:

Shoot in 4:2:2 HD (there's no compression but because of the pixel offset you don't have 100% color to fill the entire frame)

Shoot in 4:4:4 SD

This project certainly is giving me a decision to look at.

I am interested in this new Panasonic HDX camera, but what would you guys choose? A DVX modded with the Andromeda or the new HDX camera?

This is something running through my head. With the DVX being able to do 720p with this mod and combined with some sort of 35mm adapter (like the mini35 or micro35), the DVX can become a serious filmmaking powerhouse camera. Any thoughts or opinions?
 
..you also lose most of if not all of the image controls that the DVX normally has wit the andromeda leaving you to do it all in post . + you have no panasonic warranty and a hacked and boxy bigger camera that you hope works with proprietary software to make it work in post. in all honesty i think it sounds like too much of a pain in the rear or wishful thinking risk to go with something all skillfully and even geniously mcguyvered together like that. vs a tried and tested and fully warranted and backed and supported with all options normal HD camera of any kind. ...even if theres less latitude in the imagery.. ive never been too dissapointed with the dynamic range of the regular ol DVX. it makes a pretty picture in the right hands. give me that same or better image in HD and im set.

sides its really still vaporware... i doubt youll see it at NAB any time soon.
 
I would assume that the cost of the camera with the cost of the modification, plus what it entails, that the HDX will be cheaper. If not, then not by much.

Also, the workflow will be much heavier.
 
Explain this to me like I'm a two year old. How does it deal with 24p or the Cinegamma modes? I see it has to do some bypassing but at what stage. An earlier poster said "You would lose some of the cameras functions." How's that work?
 
If I remember right. I think the only thng you get is 24p and you get a raw image. So in a way you would treat it sort like a film negative and you do everything in post.
 
From what Juan has said the mod will cost less than the cost of a new DVX. A used DVX plus a mod would still be a lot cheaper than 10,000. Still vaporware at this point, but it would cool if Juan got it working. People are using the Dalsa even though it's a pain in the ass, buggy, and impractical in most shooting situations. Andromeda will probably be a lot easier to handle than that. I'd also like to see him get it working, have people embrace it, and then see how companies react to it. I'm pretty excited about the HDX, but I'd be even more excited with no compression at all and buying cheap harddrives to record to. That would rock.
 
yeah ..i would use the dalsa if i could cause its a professional cine camera with a 4k image from a 35mm sensor with over 12 stops of lattitude and backed by tested and prooven workflow with support and industry backing. I dont see the andromeda as having that big of an advantage over any regular HD cam to make it worth the hassle is all. but i do agree that id like to see it up and running with success just to put a little match under the big companies hides.. not that they arent doing awsome already, but competition is a good thing. also .. you may already be able to use cheap external drives with the HDX. the spx800 which is the big brother of the HDX can do that, and its been very heavily speculated that the HDX will inherit the ability as well. as far as uncompressed.. well i dont want to have to buy all the hardware to support it. id rather have them license a digital intermediate compression like the one from cineform. it is a great intermediate and digital workflow compression that is really visually lossless but has on average between 6:1 and 10:1 compression. i talk about them alot , but with good reason. i beleive their compression scheme can revolutionize the way we look at and go about image and video compression. it really is truely remarkable software.
 
Juan should really be building his own cameras. There's obviously a market for people who want HD without compression, and he definitely has the technical know how.

It would be awesome for a company to license Cineform, or some other lossless codec. Gotta wonder why no company's done it. If I used Andromeda or something like it I'd definitely go the Cineform route for editing.

I've been using Sheervideo for backup purposes and it does an amazing job of shrinking large files by up to 2.2 times.
