C100: 35mm Prime on C100

Im looking for a 35mm solution on my C100

I have lots of Canon L series lenses and love the resistance on the focus ring.

and I was looking at the 35mm L but its just dated.

I live in a small city where rental house wont give me the ability to try them all (zeiss, rokinon, Canon, etc)

any suggestion ? please, no Zoom lense suggestion.

I have a delicked Rokinon 35mm and it is nice. For the price you can't beat it. Very sharp, the contrast is decent, and the bokeh is quite acceptable if not amazing. Build quality is very good for the price, about 270 degree focus throw and nice manual aperture.

If you are willing to pay for a CP.2 there is no question that lens is leagues ahead in terms of IQ and build. Personally I can't spend 4k on a lens but it is worth it. I've been on a few shows where that is the workhorse and it is a great lens.

invest in a nikon f mount manual focus 35mm f1.4 AIs prime and an adapter, it will last you a good while and hold its value provided you are careful when purchasing.

Don't bother with the 35mm f/1.4 AIs. It's substantially larger than other Nikkors one would use for this purpose and is soft and has some significant CA at f/1.4. The 35mm non-AI f/2 is a better lens.

cheap option is nikon 35mm 1.8 - is a g lens so no aperture ring but sharp wide open and costs very little

Zeiss you get a decent amount but pay an awful lot. Likely the best options but with diminishing returns for the price. Not better in a field-significant way. Nice for renting since clients love the name.

The Sigma 35mm f1.4 is highly regarded, much sharper but worse bokeh than the L. The 35mm f1.4 AIS is awful wide open; the 35mm f2 is indeed better, though both are superb stopped down and useable (if lower contrast) at f2.

The Rokinon is MF only but the focus ring is smooth. Marks are off a bit, but optics are swell. Construction looks nice but is janky. The contrast is great down to f1.4 even in the corners but the resolution isn't perfect. Really this is a great lens, though, if you can find it on sale it's a great deal (of course local exchange rates might make it worse or better).

There should be a new L soon, but the price will initially be very high I'm sure.

I have the Canon L 35mm and its a winner! Sharp wide open. Calling it dated is..... well funny! Just go to B&H and see how users rate it or I'll just tell you. 5 stars. Next week I may be able to show a couple screen grabs. I used the Canon 35mmL for a few shots. Great lens.

Here's a frame grab from today. Canon C300 with the Canon 35mmL at 1.8. Exported from premiere pro unedited. Shot in C Log.
