I am looking into getting a 35mm adapter for my DVX100b. I dont not know much about what lenses will fit on my camera and what not. Does anyone know anything about these and which ones will fit on my camcorder?

Welcome to DVXUser!

35mm adapters are a little more complex than just fitting a lens on your camera. The adapter itself can accept any 35mm lens with a lens mount compatible to the adapter (you can get adapters for Canon EOS, Nikon, Pentax, etc.). The 35mm adapter then attaches to the camera, usually with a macro lens adapter.

DVXUser has an entire forum dedicated to 35mm adapters. Start there and do your research. There are many different options out there, from inexpensive models to really top-of-the-line $2k+ rigs, and even DIY versions. And there's lots of footage out there with various adapters. You can find a lot of it here in the forums, or you can go to places like vimeo.com and search a particular adapter for examples.

The other thing you need to ask yourself is, "Why do I need a 35mm adapter?" Folks get these things thinking that they must have shallow DOF to "look professional." Too many end up shooting everything shallow once they have their adapters. The truth is, shallow DOF in professional film production is used sparingly and intentionally.

If it's just for shallow DOF, save your money and spend it on something more practical. However, these adapters can add a pleasant vignetting and a texture from the vibrating/spinning ground glass that can be useful in production. Plus, the wider selection of lenses and the ability to use primes, if you know what you're doing, can offer tons of creative possibilities. But there are also challenges in shooting with 35mm adapters: light loss, focusing issues, etc.

Again, read up on them. Learn from others' experiences before you jump into this yourself.

Good luck!

Just about any 35mm adapter will work with a DVX100, you just need the camera thread to be 72mm. From there any kind of 35mm lens will work on the adapter so long as you have the corresponding Lens mount on the adapter. Go with a PL mount, you can use Arri Ultra Primes, Master Primes, ect. or go with a Nikon AI mount and use any lense with that kind of mount. Each 35mm adapter can switch out to various kinds of lenses. Just have to find what kind of lenses you want to use.

Do you have any ideas on what kind of mount you'd perfer? Or brand of lens? Standard on top of the line 35mm movie cameras is a PL mount.
