30p or 60i?

I'm shooting a Tai Chi instructional video for a client next week. This will be my first shoot with my new DVX other than playing around with it so I'm fairly new to the different frame rate options.

I'm wondering what would give me the best look/feel/quality for this type of video, 30p or 60i? From what I can tell, 60i handles fast motion a little better but the Tai Chi movements are fairly slow and I won't be doing any time remapping in post, so that's not really an issue.

The final output will be to DVD so I want something that will look best on a standalone DVD player and will play back well on either a progressive scan or NTSC TV.

I still cant figure out why people say use 60i over 30p for fast moving stuff. 30P is better cause p stands for progressive, meaning no interlacing. I personaly only have one scenefile set at anything other then 24P or PA, and thats 30P.

My two bits.

I would shoot in 30p. It'll make your video look different than the rest. Only shoot in 60i if you want to do super slow mo stuff.

because 60i has twice as many temporal samples as 30p. I do think 30p would be great for a project like this, however.

Hell, for Tai Chi, I would have no worries shooting 24p. Do a quick test and see what you like best, man.

Yeah really horse haha I mean look at stuff like Stund Visions. Shot on a DVX at 24P, and that stuff looks SO AWESOME!

Yeah because it's Tai Chi, you could probably get away easily with 24p. It'll give it a nice look too.

thanks for the input. i'll be playing around with it more this week and will shoot some test shots in both 30 and 24p and see how it looks for what I'm trying to achieve. I'm also going to be using a glidecam (2000 pro) for this shoot. One concern of mine is that I'm going to be using two cameras for this but I'm not sure what the 2nd camera is going to be yet. I can probably get an xl1 or sony dsr250 from school but neither of those shoot 24p which presents a problem for post. Thinking about just renting a 2nd dvx for the day though.

There aren't any sync problems with 24pA, either. But you shouldn't shoot 24pA unless you plan to edit in 24p.

You can convert the 60i from the other cameras to 24p and edit in 24p. Or, you can edit everything as 60i and accept the differences. (In which case, shoot 24p, not 24pA.)

You won't see any interlacing with 30p, because each pair of fields makes up a whole progressive picture. They're the same instant in time, so there's nothing different between the two.

You'll see some interlacing with 24p standard if you edit on a 60i timeline, but only in 2 frames out of 5, not in every frame like 60i. If you remove its pulldown and edit in 24p, you'll see none.
