30f for web advice?

I'm looking for some advice on a project I'll be starting in a few days. It will be a long series of strength and conditioning videos for a university athletics site. Whenever I shoot sports, I always shoot 60i as the end destination is television and dvd. This project however, is destined for the web and therefore viewed back on computer monitors. Because of this I want to do it in 30f, but quite honestly I have never worked with that frame rate before. I know that 24f would be awful for something like this due to high motion and lots of panning. Would 30f be a good option for this project? Also does anyone have a tried and true workflow for 30f to web? As far as software I use Premier Pro 2.0, After Effects, etc., and I also have Vegas 6 and 8. Thanks for any help or advice you can give!:dankk2:

I've never shot a single frame of 30f on my Canon but really what it's like is shooting 60i and de-interlacing it. Your basically shooting 29.97 progressive, 60i is 29.97 interlaced. So it'll be the same really...24f can be used for sports if you know capture it properly but I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't tried it.

30f should work just like any other mode on the camera, and shouldn't change much in the editor.

Exactly. Just set your sequence to 29.97 but instead of picking a field dominance, select none. 30p(f) is way underrated for things like this IMO.

Thanks Kyle, I've never thought of 30f being the same as progressive 60i but I guess it makes sense. I've never shot a frame of 30f either that's why I'm curious how sports would look in that mode. Not too long ago while in Australia I filmed an Aussie rules football game (Adelaide Crows). When I turned the camera on it was still on 24f and I forgot to switch it to 60i. After a few minutes I realized and switched. When I looked back at the tape on the computer I could really see why 60i was the preferable of the two. I just wonder if 30f being progressive 60i will handle the motion like 60i rather than 24f.

Thanks Will, sounds like it should work fine. I just get nervous when I try something new because something always seems to happen that you didn't think about or expect. I think I'm going to get my son to do some running back and forth outside and give it a dry run. I appreciate the help guys!

I do 30f to web almost every day. The workflow is pretty easy. I usually capture with Vegas 8 and downsample to cineform 720 30p intermediate on export. From there I import into after effects for whatever it is I want to do then, size it down to a web size and output to FLV, MP4 or whatever. I much prefer 30f to 60i. But then I do a lot of chromakeying as well.

By the way, part of the reason Video looks like Video is because of the shutter speed. You can shoot 30f and get a much better looking result if you up the shutter a little. Like for people who shoot 60i and have no alternative. You wont get 24p exactly but to the eye if you shoot 60i or 30p and up the shutter a little bit...(1/120 if that...I'm not sure) you should get a pretty cool look.

I don't know something to try. :)
