- 3 gain question (just curious)

I have been using -3 db gain for quite a while now and I have been noticing that 0 db looks better in terms of quality (less artifacting, etc). Am I crazy or have other people noticed a difference.

I know this question has been asked before but while im on the topic of -3 gain:
Why not make -3 db 0 db? Does -3 db use noise reduction?

Is that so? It reduces dynamic range? How comes, I did not know that and it is my standard setting even in harsh daylight, snowfields and in house shootings. I never changed it. But.. if it reduces dynamic space , I 'll need to test that or change that.

I want noise free as possible.

I use -3db in combination with the Letus Extreme... I was picking up a lot of noise at 0db with the adapter...

I couldn't agree more.
I did a very low light comparison test and the only thing i noticed when using -3dB was taht there were more black noise blocks. (disturbing) and the nose was exactly the same.

So i understood why all the best presets posted out there have gain at 0dB

In highlight situations, that is almost always outside, I find the -3db gain setting doing very good, in combination with 50hz shutter and ND filters. Clean shots, and I found a dynamic range that is no different than with 0 db gain.

The preset settings is another thing where you can gain colors and/or change overall gamma settings etc. In very low light situations -like you tested- you win nothing by bringing down the gain below zero, here you can better go up to +3 db without troubles.

It is not a noise filter, it is more an amp. If you amplitude a electronic signal you get more noise, but if you make the signal less sensitive in a low light situation, shure you will see unpleasant images.
