C100: 3.5mm mic clipping at -10dB

Hello,

I recently had my Rode wireless lav plugged into the 3.5mm input without top handle.

Levels were hitting -10dB during dialogue. When I checked the audio on my PC, it had clipped at -10dB.

The Tx and Rx are both set to 0 gain. They work as they should through XLR.

Any ideas?

When I started out, I had this issue with my Senneheiser wireless. I discovered that they were set with the sensitivity too high at the transmitter or receiver and sending a distorted signal to my C100 that I could not attenuate with the level controls on the camera. They'd show as well in the black on my C100 meters. Although the Rode is digital, it sounds like the same issue? Maybe drop the gain. Really, you should be going by what you hear on your headphones rather than just by the meters. If it's coming in clipped, you should be able to hear that.

Funny thing is that when I tried out the Rode, I found the signal to be lower than my G3s. I used the same OST801 and Rode mic on both.

What was the trim on the Camera set at? Were you hearing digital or analog clipping? You can oversaturate the preamps on the C100 and get analog clipping. In fact, the C100 XLR inputs can get preamp distortion if you set them below 4 and give them a hot signal without ever actually getting clipping on the digital side.
