3 550D vimeo vids

OK I'm a bit of a noob with this but can anyone answer me this. The first video looks lovely in the low light but the second is showing quite a bit of noise. What's the reason for this? I'm thinking of getting one and my main concern is low light shooting.

Thanks.

Looking at the videographers, the first seem to know what they're doing more - they have the camera on a nice tripod, they're properly framing the shots, and they're probably putting more attention into ISO settings, etc. A monitor of course would help with that (not to mention focusing). The second vid is more on the run, handheld, not as much time spent on getting the right ISO, or putting the subjects in the right spots to make full use of the available light.

Both vids are using the 50mm 1.8, which, at only a hundred bucks, is probably the best value lens you can get if you're on a budget. It will give you MUCH better lowlight performance and shallow DOF than the kit lens. If you have a few hundred bucks more, the 50mm 1.4 will perform even better. Some people prefer the Sigma 30mm 1.4, which will give you a wider view, more useful for lowlight action, eg.:

Of course, in very lowlight conditions you are going to get some noise - just look at COLLATERAL, filmed on a FAR more expensive cam. A good, cheap solution is to use a china ball with a daylight fluro (to match the street lights) mounted on a boom pole just over the actor's heads. Many Hollywood films are lit this way, eg. David Fincher said on ZODIAC, a very dark film, he shot 10 weeks straight without a single "film light". They used a single chimera lantern (a fancy, professional version of a china ball) for many scenes - check out the DVD is you get a chance.
