2x anamorphic is too narrow :( - solution?

i just tried my Kowa 16D and it feels that 2x wide is really toooo much for me.
i have no money for decent 1.5x, so will that trick be a reasonable compromise?:

i wanted to know if i can squeeze and stretch in post while managing to keep a decent resolution enough for theater screenings.

so if i have an original 16:9 footage vertically stretched:
let's say i squeeze the vertical from 1080 to 810 (basically not losing res here)
and stretching the horizontal from 1920 to 2400 (sacrificing a bit res)

does that seem logical? im not an expert, so what aspect will that create ?
and if this is not the exact calculation, what is? (for gaining the original aspect intended?)

thanks in advance :)

Here you go. See post #22. This will do the trick.

You can also just rent my Iscoramas for a month for dirt cheap. :) Either way is fine. Cheers!

renting in Israel?
yea, right... No one's heard of Isco here.

Not sure I read in your link any conclusion on how well this
Solution works.

it's a GH2..

i know it LOOKs ok, i did try it,
but what i ask is about the downsides of doing it- what's the damage?
and if i ruin any anamorphic magic by doing it? (will it basically look the same as a real 1.5x lens 'effect' ?)

and i also need to know what's the exact numbers i have to squeeze & stretch for getting the right proportions of the image (the basic will be 1920X580 in this case, right ?)

The exact numbers are in the post.

There isn't any "damage". One loss you will have though...is a little loss of width. Other than that....you're good to go! Cheers! Enjoy!

thanks. i'll do some more experiments.
a GH2 hack wont give us a 4:3 avchd video frame right ? :(
that would be amazing for anamorphic. have you tried taking a still picture with the lens on the 4:3 mode ?

The GH2 shoots so sharp you can easily crop your footage and it will still be sharper than a 7D's.

Sorry couldn't resist the joke :)

I think Vitaliy is working on it for the GH13 (mjpeg I think). Once the GH-2 is hacked, hopefully that will be possible too!

hey ipowell -
what exactly i have to do to watch those 16D images you put on the your anamorphic thread? it's a bit confusing..

btw- there will never be an AVCHD tweaked format for native anamorphic aspect, right? even for a hacked gh2..
isn't mjpeg a hassle to work with? it always seem less attractive..

Before AVCHD there was MJPEG. It has a more organic look than AVCHD (which probably has something to do with its slightly noisier image) and can be very sharp. But to reap its benefits it has to have a high data rate (less compressed). IMO all AVCHD footage has issues in the dark areas. It has nothing to do with DSLRs. AVCHD is typically sharper and cleaner...but less organic looking (that's not to say it can't make beautiful pictures).

thanks T, but how reliable is the mjpeg workflow with the hack? (not that i expect it to be here any time soon for GH2)
and how much space/card type is needed for the task?

Now that I can't answer. I didn't use it with my GH-1(3).

(ohh...congrats on your 1,000th post).

not sure i'll get more respect now... ;)

damn, just tested taking a still on 4:3 mode with the 16D...
it looks perfect when squeezed to native aspect. grrrrrrrr....

imagine how ridiculous this is. we just need the old DV 4:3 format back !
the same thing we tried to get rid of before they made 16:9 the HD formal aspect and ruined the budget 2X lens potential :(

i'm afraid i didnt read any optimistic news about a 4:3 availability with the future hack. did i miss something ?

yea i did: (from improvement list):

AVCHD/sensor

  • 1080p60 (most probably it is impossible).
  • 1080p25, 1080p30.
  • v720p24, 720p25, 720p30
  • 1:1, 1.2:1, 4:3, 1.37:1, 1.59:1 and 21:9 aspect ratios.
  • More variable frame rate options.
  • Ability to use wheel with Fn key to adjust frame rate during recording.
i thought it wasn't possible with avchd at all..
how come it might be done on a GH2 hack and isn't possible on GH13?

please keep me optimistic Vitaliy :)

what's suppose to be the 4:3 resolution if possible ? becuse we still have to zoom the footage to fit any 16:9 HD screening, right?
so basically we might not gain anything if we get it back to fit 16:9...
it's the same as shooting the 2x anamorphic in 16:9 and post aspect it to 1.5X..
loosing resolution either way.

If you want your footage shot anamorphic, cropping it to 16:9 won't do it justice imo.

That said, i'm waiting for the high-res 4:3 mode also. Shooting 2.66 and cropping it down to 2.37 would be heaven.

i didn't mean to crop, i just wanna squeeze it back to it's native aspect. so shooting 2X anamorphic on a 4:3 aspect
would still force you to resize the footage to a 16:9 frame- that is, after you've squeezed the 4:3 anamorphic footage horizontally.. am i right ?
otherwise you are left with an anamorphic footage 'box' in the middle of the 16:9 frame.

The sample images in my Anamorphic Cinemascape thread are just JPEG frame grabs uploaded to a free image hosting site. Any modern browser should be able to display them.

MJPEG video has nothing but key frames, which I actually find easier to work with than AVCHD. At this point, there's no useful way to alter the frame size of AVCHD modes and no way to hack the GH2. The G2, however, shares the GH2's Extended Telecropping mode and touch-screen auto-focus features. In addition, the G2 is hackable much like the GF1, but unfortunately, the PAL<->NTSC patch does not yet work.
