What are the possibilities that Canon (and others like Nikon) will get into a resolution race with video like they did the megapixel race with stills?

They're already hitting the upper limit with the amount of pixels they can fit on a chip. They're already trying to up the frame rate of stills with the 7D capable of pushing 8fps at 18mp. So... could it be possible they might introduce 2k, 3k or 4k video at some point in the next few years on their higher end pro cameras like the 1Ds? The megapixels are already there, it's just a matter of making the computer inside the camera and the sensor able to handle it.

Do they even care?

As Barry and others have stated many times before 1080 is basically 2K. All the manufacturers I am sure will start upping the Ks as soon as they get everything else working. They will also have a RAW codec working.

Well, full 4x3 2K is quite a bit higher res than 1080p, but 16:9 or 1.85:1 2K is only marginally bigger than 1080p.

I don't really expect someone like Canon or Nikon to go inventing new video formats, Red kind of did but they were always targeted at the cinema market where it made sense. At some point the japanese companies will introduce UHD and I would imagine that the VDSLRs would eventually evolve to support it...

To me, it's too unpredictable a time to tell.
It could go so many different ways.
It's easy to assume we'll see a res war as we have a megapixel war, but I don't think it will go on as long before a different type of imaging standard is defined, possibly in 3D or some variation of that.

At some point, economic forces on both sides (demand for the tech and inexpensive cost) will make that inevitable. The question is when.

Did you go to the NHK super hi-vision theater at NAB this year?

I would absolutely love it if we were given the native 3:2 or 4:3 dimensions for the videos like the Pentax and Ricoh do. It would solve the moire and aliasing, right?

The real issue is using more data off the sensor and less shortcuts. That data is already available, we don't need more megapixels or even 2K. So little is used right now anyhow off of an 18 or 21 Mp sensor. Improving the quality of HD is only baby steps away. As Barry said elsewhere a 3Mp sensor would be sufficient, if all of that information was really being used for HD. There is 1920x1080 and then there is 1920 x 1080.

Exactly. I'd like actual legit 1080p before we start getting into more and more recorded (but not actual) resolution. The sensor technology is there in the camera already. They just need to move data around faster.
