I have a legal video that was edited in FCP 6 that is just under 2hrs. I need to put it on dvd what is the suggested way to export. I will be using Idvd to burn the disk.

The best thing to do out of FCP is Export>QuickTime and make it self contained at current project settings.

But why are you using iMovie? If you have FCP 6, you have Compressor and DVD SP. Export the movie, then use Compressor to convert to DVD-ready media files. Then use DVD SP to author the DVD, which you can do as an auto-start with no menu.

i will try this. But why cant i export using compressor to begin with.

also in compressor there are several dvd setting should i just choose the one that best fits my time frame?

Thanks!

I would just use compressor. Choose DVD Best quality 120 minutes. It will make a mpeg-2 (m2v) file and AC3 audio. Import those into DVD studio pro, in the inspector select first play and choose tracks and stories, track 1, track. Insert a disc, choose build and format, choose a location for your disc build and it will demux and burn your DVD.

Exporting from FCP using Compressor is a PITA. It's slow. It's clunky. It bogs down the system.

Just export the full-rez movie first, and then quit FCP and use Compressor. It'll be smoother and faster. As for presets... yes, use the one (best quality) that fits your project's run time.

export the full-rez movie first? = Quicktime movie self contained?

Thanks!

You should export to QuickTime with Current Settings (same as your Timeline) and either Self Contained or as a Reference movie. Make sure that the option to "Recompress all Frames" is off.
I prefer Self Contained as it makes a master file that is not dependent on the continued presence of the original footage and render files.

Bring that file into Compressor and apply the DVD preset that the running time of your project fits into. Import the resulting MPEG 2 and ac3 files into DVD Studio Pro and author your disc.
