GH2 29.97 vs. 23.976

I'm not sure how this keeps happening. I usually double check to make sure the camera is in the right setting. I wasn't running camera, but I did set it up and I know for sure it was set to shoot in 23.976.. yet all my clips are 29.97.

This is a feature film, so what do we do now? Reshoot it? or is there a way to convert it to 23.976?

How do you determine that your clips are in fact 29.97? While it may be obvious, the GH-1/2 encodes 24 fps with the 3:2 pulldown, and so the 'clip' reads as 29.97 when viewed in such tools as Premiere, or the like.

CS5 Premiere will automagically remove the pulldown when the media is placed in a 23.976 configured time line.

How to determine the the pulldown is 'there', is to single step through a few frames in a 29.97 time line, and if there are repeating frames ever 2 or 3 frames, it is in 3:2 format. Obviously to see that one needs something moving...

As for how other NLE's handle the media from the GH-1/2, I don't know. I use to use Final Cut Express and transcode to Apple Intermediate Codec, then got a copy of ProRes, but by that time I had begun to really move over to Premiere... in any case the transcoding process also included a remove pulldown option...

I was using the newest quantum patch on my GH2 with SH.
I had it set on HBR mode, which I thought was the 1080p 24 mode. I know cinema mode is, but I didn't think cinema mode would be utilizing the high bit rate patch.

I have premiere cs5.5

I've loaded some other stuff I shot before I started using the patch, and it shows up in premiere as 23.976. But I had it in cinema mode for those shots.

Well, unfortunately I haven't installed the patches or the hacks, etc. So, I can't help on that point...

HBR is NOT 24fps, HBR is 30p and that's what you recorded. There are many converters but I suspect converting from 30 to 24 is not going to be as good quality as recording 24p to begin with. I have not done it, so perhaps it's not as bad as I think... Al

Well for some reason I was under the impression that HBR meant "high bit rate". I'm going to take a wild stab at it and assume that I need to leave my camera in cinema mode regardless of patches, unless I want to shoot 60p or some other specific frame rate?

There are quite a few ways to go about converting it. They are slightly less than ideal but probably will not be the end of the world. I'm not familiar with the premier workflow, unfortunately. There were quite a few tutorials surrounding the 5d mkII before it shot at 24p and I bet a search could dig them up.
No offense but you should have done more testing and research before shooting for a feature. Plus the look of 24 and 30 on the screen is quite different. I know how indie production can be hectic though, so it's a learning experience. :).
The gh2 does not record 24 in a 60i stream like the gh1. It does output the hdmi that way though.

It ONLY records in 24p if it says 24h or 24L.
SH is 60p

This is my 2nd feature. Mistakes happen.

I must have gotten my menus mixed up.

I've used twixtor and after effects to convert it to 24p, so all is well.. Will just make sure the GH2 is set in the right mode from now on.

Drag the clip in premiere to the new sequence icon and PP will create a new sequence with the correct frame rate. Export lossless or to high bit H264 using media encoder, and set the frame rate you want at output. Assuming three things, you have cuda enabled, max bit depth and max render quality, PP will use its cuda enabled scalers to resample your video. Very slowly. Take the resampled video and dump it back on the timeline. You can buy a 3rd party resampler but it won't be much better.

Edit--I see you used twixtor already. In that case, you can leave it as is or take a few seconds of the clip to RS and compare to the twixtor version.
