28-135mm kit lens stabalizer noise.

Alright so I am fairly new with the 7d and I just noticed an unusual humming/grinding noise when the stabilizer is turned on. Like so loud it overwhelms the audio. I am thinking I might be crazy and the noise has been there all along or maybe something is actually wrong with the lens. When I turn the stabilizer off the noise stops. It also stops when in picture mode.

I have never noticed this until today. I thought the noise went away after the stabilizer was turned on for a few seconds. I question myself since I am not to familiar with this camera yet.

These DSLR's are an entirely different ball game for me.

thanks,
keaten

There is a thread on the first page. It's normal (the sound), but please look around a little first.

Trust me I do look around. And the noise is not a subtle hum. When I am saying it overtakes the audio it really is impossible to record any audio with the stabilizer turned on.

why don't you hire an inexpensive solid state recorder for your next shoot where audio is crucial? The audio in this cameras isn't that good anyway. Synching is very easy as long as you use a clapperboard!

When the sound is described as "subtle", people are talking about how easily you can hear it with your ears, which is not very well; you have to listen for it. However, when listening back to audio playback, sounds that occur on the body of the camera jump out and slap you in the face. Handling noise, button presses, turning the zoom ring and, yes, image stabilisation noises are all very present and overtake all other sounds, even though they're not particularly loud noises to our ears.

What you are talking about sounds perfectly normal.

Thanks for the replies. this really isn't a huge deal for me even if mine is abnormal. I just wanted to know and couldn't find the answer I was looking for on the boards. This camera needs to be stabilized when shooting anyways so you shouldn't ever need the stabilizer turned on. great camera though. I am blowin' away what it can do compared to my hvx with letus.
