I’ve got a question on the 25F-mode on the PAL versions of Canons camcorders, and more specifically on the XH A1. In the near future I’m going to use this camera on a project, and since I haven’t used it before, I’m looking into the different recording modes.
I understand that the 24F-mode on an NTSC model is 24 ‘progressive’ frames (is there a name for this? It’s not fields, is it?) recorded onto 29,97 frames per second. But since PAL is already 25fps by default, what exactly is 25F? Are these 25 ‘progressive’ frames onto a standard 25fps (50 interlaced fields)?
Now technical side isn’t really what I’m interested in, but what I want to know is what’s the most practical way to work with this while editing? It seems to me that it wouldn’t need any pulldown, since it’s the same amount of frames, right? Is another way around it needed, or is it possible to edit in the standard HDV PAL preset in Premiere Pro? (Or off course the downloadable Canon 25F preset)
And how does the 25F mode compare to the ‘regular’ 50i mode? Next to the regular stuff, like choppy pans and tilts, etc. Is the picture sharper, or a tad more blurry? And is there any difference between these modes when comparing SD to HDV. Since it’s not a done deal that I’ll be shooting in HDV (Lack of editing hardware…)
Does anybody have any experience with the 25F on the PAL version of the XH A1? Thanks in advance!
