24pa capture question

hi there,

I have a basic question, to which I've been finding conflicting advice.

I shot my footage on a DVX on the 24pa setting. I am capturing at the moment and the settings are for "DV NTSC 48 kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal" at 23.98fps. I will be editing in a 23.98fps timeline.

What I am wondering is in the capture part of this workflow, am I capturing at the correct frame rate? ...should it be set to 23.98 or 29.97?

I've trawling the various sites, and am not getting a straight answer...

much appreciated!

thanks noah, i've been seeing a load of wacky responses to this question - namely those who say to digitze with the frame rate set to 23.98...

Yeah -- Definitely not!!

However, for the 'slow readers' in the audience, Noah's post can be misleading.

You can use the preset capture setting that has the REMOVE ADVANCED PULLDOWN in it, but it won't be anamorphic - you can duplicate that setting and add the anamorphic tag.

If you don't want to use that preset and actually remove the cadence on your own THEN you need to make sure you are digitizing it at 29.97.

However, choosing to ignore the 23.98 capture setting all together is your best bet.

Yeah the anamorphic is not that critical at capture if you forget to check it. All it does is tell FCP to display 16:9 footage properly. It doesn't affect the actual capture at all. You can easily reset this property in your bins for each clip's Anamorphic setting.

oops... sorry -- yes, a while ago.

Forum persona is still CaptM.

I slipped into work email signing!!

Mike!

PS -- and what I didn't add about the capture preset above was that it is awful persnickety. One bad cadence drop and you are hosed! That's what I really meant.
