Aside from the zoom, does anybody know if there’s anything else improved in the lens?

Sony is saying the lens in the HVR-V1U uses extra-low dispersion (ED) glass, which is basically what fluorite does in the Canon cameras.

I don't recall Sony ever saying the Z1 uses ED glass.

The zoom ratio was improved but sadly the wide end got less wide. On this camera the wide end is 37.4mm (equivalent) while on the Z1 it is 32.5mm.

The filter diameter also went down from 72mm on the Z1 to 62mm on the V1.

The maximum aperture is the same, f/1.6-2.8.

Yeah, Nikon optics for DX lenses are ED.
I knew what I was seeing wasn't just from the sensors, there had to be some other mojo they're working with the optics to get that quality.
Thanks for the info. Tim.

anyone else notice the white object shooting through the left hand side of the frame a little less then halfway through? Or am i losing my mind?

Yes! on the second video.
I do see it.

It shows up on the 25th second.

I frame by framed it and see it go from right to left.
At one point it's just under the left side of the parachute.

Total UFO.

Weird...

When I was first looking to replace my PD150 I was on the fence between the FX1 and the DVX. The deal breaker was the 24p. Got the DVX and am very happy.

Sony has now taken 24p seriously (no more cineframe mumbo jumbo) this cam has def peaked my interest, and slammed the breaks on my HVX plans (for now). HDV has more than its fair share of critics here at DVXuser, but in other forums and trade mags I read it is taken quite seriously. Cant wait for Adam Wilt to snag one. I must learn more! :)

I am still hung up on the sensor size (only 1/4 inch). Still waiting to see some objective tests. Meanwhile, lets grab an existing cam...

The guy who shot these clips should be able to give us some insight on the image control options (gamma, matrix, knee, black strech, etc). Anybody here knows them? Since it was Barry who posted it, maybe he might be able to get some info with them.
