24P questions

First off, I admittedly do not have a good eye. Many times when viewing posted videos I simply cannot pick up on all the little details others are commenting on. So.......

I shoot 30P on the DVX almost exclusively and love the images I get. However, I keep hearing others say that 24P is the way to go. The only difference I can detect when shooting 24P is the difference in motion. I have two DVX’s and when set up identical with exception of one shooting 30P and the other 24P, the images look the same to me. What am I missing here and how do I look for it?

Second, I have a 47" LCD and a 42" plasma. The 24P footage runs smooth on the LCD but a bit jerky on the plasma. Overall I much prefer the images on the plasma and would like to get rid of the jerky motion. Is the problem with the TV, the DVD player, how I am encoding the DVD, or what? I assume since it runs smooth on one TV the problem is not the camera or the way the video was shot. Is there some setting I need to adjust on either the TV or DVD player to play the 24P footage correctly?

The difference between 24p and 30p is the motion: 24p "moves" like film (which runs at 24 frames per second), and 30p has a smoother "video" look to it.

A few questions, though:

- Which flavor of 24p are you shooting? 24p, or 24pA?
- What NLE do you use, and are you able to remove the pulldown and edit the 24p material as 24p? Or are you editing it in a 29.97 timeline?
- What are you using to encode the DVD? What settings do you use?

Yes, the difference in motion between the two is the one thing I can see. But I see no difference in the overall images. Am I missing something here?

I have tried both 24P and 24PA and see no difference between these two. I use Vegas, Pro 5 and Pro 11, and have tried editing on both 23.97 and 29.97. I've tried encoding to mpeg2 and avi before pulling into ARCH 5 to burn DVD set to 23.97. Same results whether I encode to mpeg2 or let ARCH do it. Get smooth results with the LCD TV and a bit jerky with the plasma but the overall images are the same.

What subtle difference should I be seeing in the images between 24P and 30P other than motion, and any idea why the 24P motion looks different between the LCD tv and the plasma?

Perhaps the LCD TV is running at a refresh rate of 120Hz and the plasma at 60Hz? That could explain the difference in motion between the two.

That makes sense. However when I looked at the refresh rates of both the LCD was 120Hz and the plasma was 600Hz. Apparently refresh rates work completely different or are measured differently between LCD and plasmas. It's all magic to me. :)

This may still be the reason they look different but I can't tell from the numbers they list.

Thanks for the input. I'll keep playing with it and see what happens.

For those who may be viewing 24P on Panasonic plasma TV's:

Tried a lot of things and couldn't get it to run smooth on the plasma. Did some research and it seems that Panasonic plasmas with exception of this year's high end large screens have the flicker I am noticing on mine. Shame, as the images quality is excellent otherwise.
