24p Question

Another retarded question by me... Even though I'm now a pesent DVX user...

Okay...

I thought the 24p thing was supposed to give me a filmatic look... It looks as if I'm shooting on my Sony DCR VX2100... with a lower shutter level...

How do you blur out backgrounds, than focus on the back and blur the front out?

I feel like a retard...

Somebody please reply...

Thanks

Did you get Barry's book & DVD with the camera? If so, read it / watch it and you're questions will be answered.

Sounds like you're talking about a rack-focus. You get that by having a lens/aperture (generally, telephoto/wide aperture) setting that creates a very shallow depth-of-field, and the blurfulness is shifted by adjusting the focus during the shot.

Yeah; read the book.

There are my topics on this subject. The main difference is that the DVX records true progressive frames.

Yeah, I just filled the rebate thing out... I'm supposed to get that stuff with Magic Bullet and Instant HD...

Anybody know how long it usually takes to get that stuff?

oh man, one day... I've had the camcorder one day, and those zoom buttong on the side near where u put the tapes in and on top by the microphone don't work... Anybody know how to operate? I checked the camcorder out, Zoom-Focus is On... And I had the Zoom settings at Hi-Off-Low, changes it to Hi-Med-Low... But that's not the issue, the buttons just don't work... Not even from the controler... But when I use the ring, it works... Anybody know why?

Please reply...

Thanks

You probably have the little zoom switch set to manu instead of servo. I'm assuming the dvx has one just like the hvx. It should be in the front underneath the lens.

Either that, or you used the manul zoom ring while you had it in servo and could have damaged the zoom motor.

Concerning your first post, it sounds like you are referring to depth of field. You will not be able to accomplish shallow depth of field that you see in film with smaller chip cameras. That will require a 35mm adapter and 35mm lenses.

There are ways to simulate a shallow depth of field. Those are covered in Barry's book and in various posts in this forum.

Hope that helps,
Jason

Thanks,

Yeah I had it in Manu and just put it in Servo. So using the manual focus ring does screw your zoom up? Or if I leave it in Manu I use the ring? Servo for the buttons?

I'm looking to Upgrade to Andromeda maybe in the next few weeks. But right now, I want to just get Adobe and do some 24p editing and stuff. I don't even know what a 24p time-line looks like, Gosh I'm a late bloomer...

Also, when I sway my camera back and forth, it sounds like a metal piece or something is flapping, is that normal?

Thanks again

24p gives you the exact motion cadence of 24 fps film, and the full-frame photo (progressive) flavor. That's what it's about. It doesn't have anything to with focus or depth of field.

If the DVX is the same as the HVX in this regard, the manu/servo switch is for zoom. Manu allows you to use the zoom ring. Servo uses the rocker and/or handle zoom. Don't use the manual focus ring when you are in servo mode. It can damage the motor.

Maybe you should hold off on the whole andromeda thing until you are comfortable with the camera as it is. You can make some very filmic images with practice and research. Just check out the dvx clip/grab section.

Later,
Jason

FutureDVXuser,
Regarding "What's that clunking noise?" read this:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=48809

In addition, I reccomend you read all of the stickies on the forum. I also reccomend you go out and buy Barry's DVX book ASAP. Also, don't hesitate to do some searching around the forum, many of your questions have been addressed in other posts. One way or another, you are in the right place.

Dude, 24p is just one aspect of the film look. Depth of field is another aspect, and tougher to achieve on this camera without and adaptor, but if you read around the forum for all the tips and tricks you can do pretty well.

Yes, thats normal for the camera while not powered on. That question has been answered a thousand times on this formum. I reccomend you spend a day reading through previous posts to learn the basics of your camera. You'd be suprised how much you can pick up from reading these things.

I agree 100%. right now you're probably limited more by your skill level than your camera, start filming and practicing with your camera as much as possible and finally when you're more limited by your camera's abilities than your own then think about upgrading it.
