24p Panning

So some of these test videos of the 7D popping up have some panning. Often it is stroby while panning...is this because they don't have the shutter set to 1/50?

If you mean the kind of strobing you can see in Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator or Slumdog Millionaire then yes - it's shutter speed. F.ex. the Perya video (available on Vimeo) was shot with fast shutter.

I have also seen that in Bloom's footage from Zacuto office. Looked a bit strange, but maybe I'm just not used to see that kind of fast panning in 24p.

Yet another testiment to how 24p is not always the best choice for video. Because there are fewer frames being recorded per second, any fast motion is going to either be blurred, or missed entirely. That's why I've always been an advocate for 30p. Not a huge jump in fps, but it is 20% faster so that certainly helps.

Well, more than 100 years of filmmaking have proved that 24 fps is a viable option.
As we make the final transition form film to digital capture we can review and improve our standards but everywhere I look the frame rate is still the same. Actually in many cases where TV used 30 fps they are now changing to 24 fps, case in point some latin soap operas and some studio shows in the US.
Like any other standard 24 fps has its pros and cons, but it's still "The Standard" for narrative storytelling with moving images.

That's is a fact, 30p is much closer to 24p than 30i (which is awful).
But there's a certain lyricism to movement in 24 fps (or 25 fps) that is quite to soft spot.

Uh oh...I see this thread possibly heading in an ugly direction. But...we are all civilized....so...as you were. :)

24fps is the bestest frame rate like ever , and anyone who disagrees with me is a f******* ***** *****!!!!!!!!!!

24p requires special care ,thats all
For home videos shoot with your cellphone its probably even better than RED ONE for random panning around .
Why would you even do that ?Why panning so fast in your film,i don think its a big problem.Just dont do it.

What are you talking about when you say 30i? Don't you mean 60i? I've never heard anyone say 30i besides you. Are they both correct? Or did you just mean 60i (60 interlaced fields aka half frames per second).

Same thing. I just like this notation more. I am not the only one using it ;-)
