Hi

I am a newbie and recently bought DVX100B from Amazon.com . This coming month in mid June I have to video tape my niece's College graduation. what frame rate should I use to tape this kind of event ? 24P, 30P or 60i. I have learned that 24P will be slow in auto focus, ( ie if students walk mormal to stage can DVx100B focus and track closely or I have to use manual control it ? )
I like to video tape in 24P, and use auto focusing. Can I do that ?

Thanks

You can use the auto-focus in 24p. It is a little slow
You got plenty of time to practice with it before the event, right, if you really "focus"? You should be able to get pretty good at it by then. You'll probably be on a long shot fully zoomed in mostly, and it's not so hard to focus that when the subjects are far away.

The frame-rate is more a matter of style and workflow. Did you get Barry's DVX book with your camera? If so, read up on the different frame-rates, especially the difference between 24PN and 24PA. It depends on what you'll be editing on too.

I like the cinematic quality of 24P, and use 24PA always, unless a specific request is made not to. Real-life events seem more like a movie rather than a handycam home video.

Thansk Victors and Yeehaanow for the suggestion.

Does the X10 zoom of DVX100B good enough to cover for this event ? because sometimes I want to zoom in their faces too. Unlikely , I do not think I will have the seat next to the front sections which are normal reserve for the graduation students.
I used to have the GS400 which is I love . It has X12 cover the distance OK. But now the DVX100 with X10 a little less. What do you guy think ? should I use any telephoto lense or any kind of adapter to extend this zoom in from the distance.

It depends entirely on what you want it to look like. If you want it to look like 24p, shoot 24p. If you want it to look like 60i, shoot 60i. If you want it to look like 30p, shoot 30p.

There's nothing in a graduation that's so quick-moving that a faster frame rate will be better-suited, so you're free to use any frame rate you want.

And unless you plan to zoom in more than halfway for a lot of it, the focus issue isn't much, because at the wide side of the lens, pretty much everything is always in focus. You just set it to infinity and you've got no worries.

That said, I think you'll find that the manual focus will give you better results across the board than the autofocus -- and I don't say that because the "pros" do it that way; I say it because you can always respond more quickly and more precisely than the autofocus ever will, and the DVX's ring makes it easy.

I have never heard it put so plain Jim. Hehe

Shoot 24P go with manual focus, get it focused on the stage area where they shake hands zoomed all the way in and remember that number. That way if something happens to your focus, or you are adjusting it for something different, you can quickly go back. Just make sure your NLE will edit 24P properly. Vegas makes it a no brainer.
