24p interlacing issue when exporting.

Hello,

I have tried the search tool, and I can't seem to find result dealing with my issue. On the music video I just finished(posted in the grabs section for dvx100), when I export I've been getting all of my footage interlaced. I shot in 24P(non-advanced, the one right after that), and when I view all of my footage on my computer it looks totally fine.

When I export, using H.264, or MPEG-4, I get loads of interlacing. I thought that maybe because I was shooting at 250/shutter speed it would show a bit of ghosting..but it still interlacing regardless(of shutter speed).

Does anyone have any suggestions, I'm pretty advanced with FCP HD, but can't really find away around the interlacing issue, other then trying new codecs(which I do not think is the issue). I do of course select (de-interlace source video) when I export, but maybe I shouldn't be doing that?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

edit: I just changed the timeline to 23.98 like everyone suggested, and it still does it. I guess I need to try capturing it differently, and shooting in 24pA.

You never want to deinterlace 24p footage. You need to remove its pulldown, not deinterlace it.

The only way to get rid of the interlacing is to remove pulldown and edit in 24p. If you want to work on a 24p timeline, particularly with FCP, shoot 24pA.

With the 24p standard footage, you can use Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown, but you have to do that before you edit.

So I capture the footage, then open up the raw footage that I just captured in Cinema Tools, remove the pull-down, then import all of the newly acquired footage(with pulldown removed) into FCP, THEN set my sequence to 23.98, THEN I can start editing, correct?

BUT if I shoot 24PA, then I do not have to use cinema tools, but I should set my sequence to 23.98, correct?

Something else to try might be to make sure you tell FPC that it is progressive footage, otherwise it will interlace it durring export.

can I ask why I shouldn't deinterlace?

Shaun is correct; there's nothing to deinterlace. But if you tried -- if you took 24p material, treated it as 60i, and deinterlaced it using the method(s) you'd normally employ (interpolation, blending fields, etc.), you'd end up with a mess, particularly if you have moderate or higher motion. You'd get ghosting or bad stutter, probably both.

Is there a way to do this in Adobe Premiere Pro? (on pc?)

Remove pulldown? Yes. Capture the footage and then drop it onto a 24p timeline. This is pretty much bulletproof in 2.0 or CS3; there's a glitch in 1.5 which has a problem with standard pulldown (but not advanced). Not 100% sure about any glitches in 1.0; the one I have in mind seems to be 1.5 only.

When you guys talk about opening it, or dropping it, into a 23.98 timeline, are you referring to go into the FCP Audio/Video settings and changing the Sequence Settings to 23.98?
