I know my HV20 pretty well I feel, but does anybody know if its possible to shoot 24p in SD? I feel like maybe i'm missing something, or maybe there's a hack or something. it just seems weird that it isnt an option.

Not an option, as far as I know.

It seems possible that someone could hack it in, but efforts to get custom firmware going haven't really taken off. At this rate of progress, Scarlet will be out before the hacks are done and a lot of people will be migrating anyway.

It is not possible to shoot 24p in SD but if you shoot 24p in HD and downconvert it using the DV lock future you will have an 60i SD video with pulldown. The cadence stays the same so if you remove the pulldown like you remove it from HD you will have 24p SD.

And that would be in 4:1:1 DV. You'd probably get better quality from downsizing the 1080p 4:2:0 HDV. In DV the compression artifacts would be larger. And the chroma subsampling would be better.

But capturing in DV isn't really bad. Works for me.

I think the biggest advantage capturing your HD footage as DV is you don't need a high end computer for editing.

Quick question: say you capture HDV, can you print back to tape on the HV-30 as SD DV so you basically have footage that will play as SD DV on any SD DV player or camera?

I'm pretty sure that you can, I have sent HDV back out to the camera before, you should be able to do it it DV also.
