24p in PALstralia

Hi all,
I was considering getting the GH2 when it comes out in Australia. I just wanted to know your thoughts on the 24p/25p/50i business. Basically, I've been following the threads and people seem to think the PAL release will feature 25p recording but not 24p.

I've decided to shoot a short film on DSLR (which I haven't done before). There is a chance the film could get a 35mm transfer for festivals, so I was thinking it would probably be best to shoot it in 24p for this reason.

If I get a 24p version of the camera, will this be difficult to transfer to film? (it is a 3:2 pulldown?) Should I be looking at getting the 25p PAL camera and slowing it down to 24p instead?

I had initially thought I'd shoot it on a 7D or 60D but I have a lot of wide shots with deep focus and I thought that the detail of the GH2 would be a better camera - I'm not really too fussed about shallow DOF. Low light capabilities would be nice though.

Thanks in advance

The PAL version has already been released in other countries. It has 24p (no pulldown required) and 50i in the 1080 recording modes. Lowlight performance of the GH2 looks to be fantastic so far

Its easier to shoot 24p and convert it to 25p, than it is to shoot 25p and move it to 24p.

When you convert 24p to 25p you just run the film fast so your showing 25 of the frames rather than 24 each second giving you a speed boost by about 5%. I am told its how all the film from America are broadcast in the UK and it results in a slightly shorter film. the 5% isn't noticeable in a speed up. I dont now if you need to modulate the pitch of audio but that's not hard.

I am told 25p to 24p involves a pull down which isn't very pleasing.

When I get my camera I am just going to shoot 24p at 1/50 second (aka 180 degrees shutter angle) when I need to avoid flicker of the lights. I don't know if you can shoot at 1/25 of a second or if that would even stop a flicker. but it is a option

I'm going to do the same thing, Marc. I did wonder about the fluro flicker too. In the past, when shooting scenes in 25p when a CRT computer screen has been in shot, I've changed the shutter speed to 1/60 to match the computer's 60hz refresh rate. This has got rid of the strobe effect. Maybe it is possible to do something like this. I'm not sure.
