I searched for threads on this but didnt find any.
I am trying to edit projects shot on 24p with final cut express.
Im told that this doesnt work. But ive captured and exported the footage sucsessfully. Last time I tried it the visual quality went down quite a bit. So now I have some new projects that look fine when being edited, but Im wondering:
- is there a best setting that will work on final cut express (the newer version) that will maximize the quality? (DVCPRO, or other...29.97 frame rate)..
Is this even possable to do right and if so can someone help me with the settings?
Im wondering why it works to even capture and export it but the visual quality goes bad..is it still possable?

thanks

FCE was not designed to edit in 24p (23.976). If you're shooting on a DVX in either 24p mode (are you using 24p or 24p Advanced?), your footage is still recorded at 29.97. So yes, you can capture, edit, and export the footage. FCE does not remove the pull-down, so you're staying at 29.97. The best thing to do is to use 24p (not Advanced) for the "film" look in FCE. Capture, edit, and export in the DV codec.

As a side note, 24pA does go to tape at 29.97 and can be edited at 29.97 without the pull-down removal. However, the pull-down is different from the regular 24p mode, which was designed to edit 24p material at 29.97.

thank you so much. Im still new and admittedly slow at learning this. Can you tell me what pulldown is again..and if you can, can you reccomend the best export (using quicktime conversion) settings I should use?

and do you know the best export settings for final cut pro for dvx100a shot in 24p?
as an interesting and humbling side note..it turns out some of my scene files were set at 24p(a)..and I didnt know..
is there a export setting(s) that you reccomend?

Pull-down adds frames to the 24p stream to conform it to 29.97. There are two kinds of pull-down cadence, 2:3:3:2 and 3:2 (aka 3:2:3:2). 24pA uses the former, and 24p uses the latter. Read THIS for a great explanation of the two.

No reason to export using Quicktime Conversion. It's clunky, and the results aren't that impressive. Just use File>Export>Quicktime Movie. Use the current project settings (default).

Now, what is your target for this? DVD? Internet? TV? Once you have a full-rez DV movie exported, you can use something like MPEG StreamClip (free download) to convert it to whatever format you'll need.

Great. that is so helpfull. Actually what this is for currently is I want to transfer the files onto a flash card and go around showing it to potential clients as a port folio. Im doing promotional videos for people. So I would like the visual quality to be as high as it can..ill try that setting now.

Then you'll want to use MPEG StreamClip to convert it to h.264. But start with a full-rez DV movie out of FCE.

MPEG StreamClip is an open-source (freeware) conversion tool. It does pretty much what Compressor (part of Final Cut Studio) does. You can convert to all sorts of different video formats.

Hello

Can you please, please, please help me C2V? I've exported my sequence from FCE4 and a Quicktime Movie with the following settings (are they ok):

Vid Rate: 25fps
Frame Size: 720x576
Compressor: DV-PAL
Pixel Aspect: Square
Anamorphic: Yes
Field Dominance: None
Audio: 2 Outputs
Aud rate: 48.0KHz
Aud format: 32-bit floating point

I downloader MPEG StreamClip and opened my test footage (it looks fantastic). I read above and on Vimeo that I should convert to h.264 with StreamClip. How on earth do I do this in StreamClip? I also wondered (although I'm probably way of the mark with my novice ability) what the difference is between 25p and the Vid Rate of 25fps in my sequence settings. Does this mean Final Cut Express can edit 25p without interlaced frames being present? Or is it something completely different?

Please, please help as I'm itching to get this video up, it looks brilliant and I'm really pleased with it :) Glad I went for the DVX!

Upon further exploration of streamclip in 'Export to other formats" i noticed in options my setting is H.264 already?

How come I cannot move quality from the 50% mark? Should I set keyframe rate to "25" as it is on "Current" and "24" at the moment? Should I set quality to "best" instead of "high"?

In sound settings the compressor is set to "None". Does this need to be modified? Do I need to change field dominance to lower? I have also deselected interlaced scanning as it seems like the right thing to do?

Wow and I thought developing real film in my kitchen sink was hard! Nothing compared to this!
