24P , hard to shoot! :(

Hi everyone ,

I find it hard to shoot with the canon A1 at 24p. im getting better at it though. I shot 24p with the sgblade RR2 and nikon 50mm 1.4 outdoors. I had it in manual mode. 1/48 shutter and almost wide open on the canon aperature and on the nikon as well just so i could get more light in. Panning side to side shows more motion blur than id like. With the cam stationary and an object moving shows not much motion blurr.

Does anyone have any pointers for me to try? I will be doing some more tests this week. Any help is much appreciated. 24P is definetely harder to shoot than 60i.

Thanks,
Chris

Without seeing footage, and knowing your settings, shooter profile, it's a bit difficult to help. But one quick thing to check is you noise reduction in custom settings. iF it's higher than the "low" setting, it creates a serious motion blurring effect, similar to using a low shutter speed. Make NR1 and NR2 Both aren't on together, as this will cause the same image problems. Also using 24p, you have to be careful not to pan too fast, it should take at least 7-10 seconds to pan a full frame.

And obviously if you're having to go wide open all the time then that's a sign that there's not enough light for the shot. Wide open aperture=soft footage which might be what you're seeing.

ill post some footage this week , i tested some of the presets found at the canon presets thread. I tested , 4 of them , cinelook , 5248 film , 5296 film , and vision x. vision x needs alot of light but the look is pretty cool. my tests have the wrong white balance. I was amazed at the sgblade footage that i forgot to use my expodisc and snap a whitebalance so my footage is very cool in color temp. sooo many variables.

ill post my video hopefully by tonight. I just started using Edius 6 to edit and its gonna take me alittle more time to get my editing up to speed. I didnt find my footage soft but maybe it is that.

i think its that i have the aperature almost all the way wide open. And it was just too dark to film with it around half closed.

What do you guys think? I checked the noise reduction , that setting is off on all my presets.

That footage has a strange stutter to it, looks like something in your post workflow is off. I'm not familiar with Edius, but I would check your timeline and export settings. Make sure everything is matching up correctly.

its up , that link to youtube works. I used Edius to render from HQX super fine to WMV codec to upload to youtube. 14 min video , slightly less than 1g in file size. let me know what you guys think.

Thanks, Chris

Im pretty sure that my workflow is ok , but ill recheck everything tonight. That's good you see the stutter too. Im going to hook the cam to my monitor using the component out and see if i see the same thing. that would be a good test i think ,

Sacksnack , you were right! Its the way i imported the 24p into vegas. I didnt import it correctly , it was imported as a 60i in a 24p timeline and exported to 24p. what a mess , lol.
I connected the cam to my monitor directly and the footage looks great. virtually no motion blur.
