24P FCP export settings

Hi all,

I just shot a video with my DVX100A in 24P in squeeze mode, then I captured it to FCP using the default DV NTSC 48kHz setting, then I edited it on a 29.97 FPS sequence (which is what you're supposed to do, right?).

So my question is what are the optimal export settings in my case? I'd like to export one to upload to sites like YouTube and facebook and another one at the highest possible quality. Can any one give me any suggestions?

Also, would I export at 24 FPS or 29.97 FPS?

Finally, how would I export it to keep the right squeezed aspect ratio?

Thanks!

So I took your advice and asked on the FCP board, but they basically told me that I should have edited with 24 FPS since I shot 24P (not PA).

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but from the research I've done, I thought the DVX100 basically records 24P footage onto 29.97 tape (or something like that). Also, from what I've read, I thought I was suppose to capture and edit at 29.97 FPS...can anyone help me understand this?

Thanks!

That's not at all what was said. What was posted was that you are encountering the limits of 24p native shooting, and that for future projects you'll have better luck entering a 24pA workflow.

24p (native) was designed for one to shoot and edit at 29.97 with the look and feel of 24p. But it's not a perfect system and the more you work with the footage in post, the more the flaws are revealed.

Right, but it isn't a smooth system. Both 24p and 24pA record to tape in 29.97... it's all in how the pulldown is added. In 24p the added pulldown is 3:2 anticipating that the pulldown will not be removed later to extract pure 24p. In 24pA, the pulldown is 3:2:2:3 so that the pulldown can be easily removed in post.

It's a little outdated as far as software/hardware versions, but the principles remain.

You did the right thing.

Both 24p and 24pA actually record to the tape as 29.97. It's just that in 24pA some frames are flagged for later removal at the capture stage.

It's only when you digitize your footage that the 24pA removes pulldown frames (using advanced pulldown removal) to create actual 24 fps footage.

So, if you shot in regular 24p, it should be captured as regular DV video - i.e.: 29.97

I usually export directly from FCP as H264 using Quicktime conversion.

Make sure you change the size settings to reflect 16 x 9 aspect ratio

Right, but it isn't a smooth system.

Ah, thanks for clarifying.

Thanks for your answer, Gregory! It helped a lot.
