24p $ 24PA

New to this. Could someone explain the differences between the two? And should i be doing anything different when i import or export using 24pa??

Thanks!

J

I've never shot in 24PA so when i go to import do i take the same approach as i would with 24p 30p 60i? Or is there something different i will need to do?

First, read THIS.

As far as what to do upon capture... you really need to provide more information. Specifically, which NLE are you using?

Hi,

I'm using Adobe Premeire Pro CS4. So according to this article, should i be using a 29.97 timeline when i import my standard 24p footage to CS4?

Anyways, would i need to do anything differently if i shoot in 24pa and import using CS4?

Thanks!

Standard 24p is designed to edited at 29.97.

I don't use Premiere, so I don't know the workflow. However, I'm sure you'd find plenty of help in the Premiere forum. In fact, a quick search might turn up some helpful information. For example:

Just capture and drop into an NTSC-24p sequence. Doesn't matter if you shot 24pA or 24p standard.

If you shot SQUEEZE, use the Widescreen sequence.

If you want to edit as 24p, it's BETTER if you shoot 24pA, but with PP CS4, you don't HAVE to. But you should.

Thanks for the help! But i heard somewhere that you have to manually remove the pulldown by interpreting the footage? So do i import then remove the pulldown on the imported footage before i put it on the timeline? OR does it matter?

Thanks!

I use FCP and this is what I do when I import 24pa footage.
before I capture any footage I make sure I set my capture settings to 2:3:3:2 pulldown, then start the capture.
after capturing I edit on a 23.97 timeline.

if I shot 24p footage I just capture as ntsc dv and edit on a 29.97 timeline.

Before we confuse the OP too much, we're not talking about FCP which has a completely different process for 24p/24pA. Premiere can automatically detect and remove either pulldown.

The reason it is better to shoot 24pA for editing at 23.976 is that the pulldown is removed and the 24 frames restored simply by dropping fields from the 2:3:3:2 cadence. Standard 24p, on the other hand, requires reinterpolating (recompressing) one of the frames from fields of two separate frames from the 29.97 material, and this can leave you with a frame of lesser quality out of every four. 24pA is a cleaner pulldown removal.
