24fps or 30fps for Cooking Show?

Internet, TV, DVD/Blu-ray, iPhone, etc. has zero to do with wether you shoot 24 or 60. That's an artistic/"look" decision. I keep hoping "30 frames" will die. The TV world is still full of people that don't understand that 30P is NOT the same as 30 fps(60 fields) in SD. If you want it to look like video, shoot 60, film 24.

Without knowing the project exactly, I'd say 24. Just watch Food Network, etc. There are many well done quality cooking shows shot in 24. Just make sure that you have a good film "look" in the cameras and how you light , also. I hate seeing some of these studio shows that are lit and shot for "video" and all they did was convert to 24 frames. It looks horrible.

I'm kind of surprised at all the push back on 24p. We've been doing 24 fps acquisition for YEARS, now. It's been commonplace shooting 24p digitally in the field for at least a decade and its never been an issue. I think I remember shooting it as far back as 2003 in SD with the DVX100 and in HD with the F900. Why now? Do some just need to play devils advocate? I think have of what I shoot is 24(23.98)P.

Good Luck

I get a bit of pushback from the old guard. (AKA real-world folks I deal with, versus internet talk) With 24p versus 30 or 60i, I guess we have to agree to disagree....I can't tell them otherwise. Fortunately, 30p looks pretty good for corporate/commercial work, IMO.

BUT....

For my own projects whether professional or personal....I always shoot 24p. Never had any any issues. I've noticed even some acquisition/delivery services will accept 24p now w/o conversion. (cable spots, ect)

Yes, you can telecine 24p to 60i. But if you're sensitive to 3:2 pulldown judder, it looks like crap.

Bruce, let me understand this . . .

Every movie you've ever watched on a TV has a 3:2 pulldown in it. Every dramatic TV show, and most sitcoms shot on film do, too, as well as most commercials. All of that. Your whole life. Sure, recently, some TVs have been able to display with refresh rates in multiples of 24, but everyone still broadcasts (even over cable/satellite) at 59.94, and most TVs still refresh at 60 Hz when displaying DVD or Blu-ray, so there's still a 3:2 pulldown almost all of the time.

So during all that time, everything you've ever watched on TV which was acquired at 24 fps or 24p "looked like crap" to you? All those movies, all those TV shows, all those commercials? Because of the "3:2 pulldown judder"? Is that what you're saying?
