does the Canon A1 have a choice like the DVX100 to record 24P then edit in 60i? (I know its 24f in the A1)

I think 24PA has to have FCP to edit it.

If I would get the A1 I won't have much left over to upgrade software right away.

I'm ready to buy. Time is running out. It looks like now rebate on the DVX100. Fro $500 more I'll go with the A1. I was really thinking about the HV20, but I think I'll make a bigger jump,,,thanks,,,

If you're talking about editing in HD then no, it doesn't work like a 1080/24p thing with a pulldown attached. You CAN shoot in 24F and then downconvert to SD but it seems that the A1 applies a 2:3 pulldown that some NLE (Premiere at least) doesn't seem to recognize and remove. Probably some kind of bug.

If you're shooting in SD mode then you can choose between 2:3 and 2:3:3:2 pulldown just like on the DVX and this will work fine with any NLE.

With the A1, shoot in 24f (there is only one option in HD)
Import into FCP using the 1080p24 easy set up then drop it into a 24p sequence and your done.
