24F Apple Intermediate Codec Capture Process

Hello everyone.

In the past, I have been ingesting my 24F footage as HDV. When I do this, and check the format in the browser window (in FCP), the frame rate is 23.98. Perfect.

I'd like to start capturing using the Apple Intermediate Codec, but have a problem when I do this. After I capture, the captured file's frame rate is 29.97. It looks fine, and when I go frame by frame, each frame is a unique, progressive frame. If I drop that file into a 24F sequence, it requires rendering.

Anybody know what's up with this? I'm using Final Cut Pro 5.1.4.

Thanks.

more specifically, what i'm asking is if anyone out there has a way to capture 24F using AIC...

Hey Blake.

You can't edit the FCP HDC-> AIC transcode preset, and unfortunately it's set at 29.97.

We use MPEG Streamclip http://www.squared5.com/ to transcode to ProRes422HQ(used to go to AIC) and it works great. You can set a batch list and walk away. It's remarkably fast and it gives you completely control over the codec settings, scaling, and other things. It's a great piece of software and it's hard to believe it's free.

You really should upgrade to FCP 6, it's worth it just to edit in ProRes422.

Thanks BlueWorld. I use MPEG Streamclip all the time, but never thought to use it for AIC transcoding.

I really appreciate your feedback. Just what I needed.
