24 p what is it good for?

While others are shopping for the latest and greatest 3D tv, I'll buy a decent 2d hdtv supporting 24p true cinema under $1K.

That's exactly what I'm wondering too, whether the people that are having excessive problems with the judder of 24p have a set that can actually display proper 24p. A lot don't even when they advertise they do,

i see other video shot on 24p look great but when i shoot it's judder look stroby evan when on tripodi just can not repoduce what i see with video shot on 24p here.

Are you running 180 degree shutter (ie 1/50th shutter speed for 24p footage?).

This make a big difference. I use shutter priority mode (set at 1/50th) and let the camera set the ISO (limited to 800) and aperture when I am doing quick shooting.

I think 24p will stay with us for very long time. 24p having less number of frames per sec doesn't mean it carries less data per second. Each frame in 24p contains more data than each frame in 60i/60p. In earlier days consumer TVs were not capable of displaying such high bitrate frames from true 24p. After Bluray's arrival, we began seeing HDTV supporting 24p true cinema in recent years. Finally we can watch true 24p for the first time at home.

The industry began touting for better standard like true 48p because they gotta introduce new things to attract more buyers. I will stick to 24p for very long time.

Its not about bitrate its about motion.

It's sorta related. I can't bear with 24p in low bitrate. Well encoded 24p in high bitrate makes motion blur pleasing.

Iam been looking at the gh2 photo (24p) at a pro monitor in a posthouse. And it looks like vhs with à little strobe effect on it... Having the camera on à trippod and no movment at all it looks ok, i have gh13 shoots 25 p 1080 looking a lot better... I think philph Bloom and Eoshd totally overrated the camera om there rewives of the gh2 or maybe they dont have à pro monitor..

you guys start to confuse me..
what's the difference between the 24p of gh2 and 25p of hacked gh1? the gh2 is TRUE 24p, so it's suppose to look better in any way.. what are you talking about?

ingoandfloyd,

So far, you've made several unsubstantiated and consistently negative remarks about the GH2. Unfortunately...

You've failed to post a GH2 video that supports your contentions. And failed to post your shoot settings or even respond to the member who requested that. And you mentioned that your GH13 video looks a lot better than your GH2 video, but failed to post a comparative video showing the differences.

What evidence can you provide to prove what you're saying or allow others to replicate your shooting conditions?

Regards,

Dan.

Yeah GH2's 24p mode looking like VHS is about the craziest thing I have heard on here ....

Yes - finally someone else has noticed it too.
Philip Bloom has lied to us already with the GH1 (nobody believe P. B.).
. . . the hack of Vitaly has moved here positive.

The difference between Philip Bloom and Andrew Reid (EOS HD) and the naysayers here is that PB and AR have posted the results of their work for all of us to see. As Dan Clark observed, these naysayers have not.

So if you feel that PB and AR have lied to you based on what you have seen of their work, then I suggest that it is not them, but your own eyes that have deceived you and that perhaps you need some corrective glasses, or find some other entertainment aside for talking rubbish.

Personally, while I appreciate their work, I no longer need it, as my own GH2 is all the evidence I require.

Well, the problem is that people nowadays get a camera and think that it brings magical powers with it. If the camera operator doesn't know about shutter speed and how it affects the look of the footage then is time for formal training. Film has many inherent attributes that make it look like film, including the very important shutter speed used to create most footage. Digital video is NOT film of course but the idea behind it is to IMITATE the look of film as close as possible. The way digital stills do with photographs. If people don't understand this then they have to really go get some formal training. Film will disappear soon enough from theaters but its legacy will be continued by professionals that really know how to preserve it.

Well, Mr Dan ! iam just hang around here spending hours of resarch just for the fun of it. NOT! iam i not allowed to be disapointed about the gh2? Beelive me after spending a lot of money on this camera i just want to be happy with it, but iam not its that ok with you? You want evidence? cant i say something negativ about this camera without evidence? If you read some ealier threads you can see i was asking around a lot if there was a possibellty that it culd be someting wrong with my camera.

Iven been working as a pro editor (avid) for 12 years and as a cameraman for 5 years. And just the other day i went to visit a friend who works as a color corrector and online editor so i took the mts file to him and i can promise you mr dan that i trust hes and my eyes moore than putting up somthing on vimeo to be judge. But if you want proof i give you proof so give me your email adress and i send you a mts file and you can see for yourself (by the way can you send me amtsfile were its a lot of movment from a jib or a glidtrack shoot that looks good on 24 p?).

You cant tell from vimeo who good the quality is for the same reason you cant tell who good the cc is, it can just give you a hint.

Mr John Caballero!!!!

i can promise you i know who to set the camera. 24 p 1/50 smooth -2,-2.-2

Grisnjam!!!!

Of course is not as bad as vhs just trying to make a point here. heard of irony?

If th gh camera is so good why is everbody so happy with the hack?

I dont say mr bloom or eos hd is a lier never said. Just say that i think they overdriven thier rewievs.

You say. Digital video is NOT film. So why the hell have they put 24 p insteed of the STANDARD 25p? It was that the thread was about.

It is when viewing it on a PAL television set. One either has to re-time it to 25 fps which causes sync issues with other cameras and separate sound or live with a pretty jerky 24-to-25 fps cadence. As ingoandfloyd has learned the hard way now. Panasonic's decision to keep 24 fps instead of 25 in the top quality mode on GH2 PAL models isn't that smart. Made it a no-buy for me.

Yeah I can see how the cadence would be annoying...but you could always just speed it up by 4%...

but what about the natural eye vision and 24p? can't recall the thread but this is a basic argument of keeping 24p (cause that's how the eye works or something ?)
i mean it's not just the "save film" thing.

With you on that. We see the world as choppy with motion blur, depending on what we're focused on, and also what kind of light we're under.

Because 24p is the standard in Japan and North America. It's also easily converted to 25p. No doubt Panasonic screwed up by not putting a 25p option in, or at least selling a PAL (region not standard) GH2s with 25p, but they didn't screw up at all by doing 24p over 25p if they had to pick one. They did what the standard was in their home market, Japan, and what is the current standard for internet streaming.
