24 P firmware On Iron Man 2

yeah saw that, then ordered one. Tomorrow is MKII day. mud free jello rich goodness.

Badass Squig!!!!
You had the whole forum wondering what you were gonna do; you zigged, zagged, flipped, flopped, flipped back, re-flopped, unflopped... I thought you were gonna give Kholi and Isaac an aneurysm.

Congrats , and post something for f--ks sake!

If they're working on 24P and possibly time code, they really should just call a spade a spade and release the video camera XL-H1 replacement version of this thing already without skipping those rows. $8K, no problem. I would sell my stocks for it.

yummy tasty jello!!! 24 frames of it...
woohooo great news !!!

I can hear it now and see the thread "but its not true 24 frame and it has no mud, it aint real" :)

Interesting. I've heard that Canon 5Dii's were being used for behind-the-scenes footage (so 30P) on IM2. I hope the rumor's right and I'm wrong! Heh.

This coincides with the murmurings in the LA film community lately.

Nice to see this also coming from other sources. This was just like the manual control rumors a few months ago. I heard the chatter in the LA community of that. Others said they were hearing it too! Then it came out.

Now it's 24fps etc.

Very Cool and look forward to trying it out when it becomes public.

Filthrich,
don't sell your HVX-Lex setup. I sold mine a few months ago as soon as I used the 5D......auto and all, but someone has to keep the 35mm forum going:)

I am debating selling my HVX-LEX combo and getting a full 5D set up. Some one please tell me that's a bad Idea!

Until they crossover the full frame 35mm or aps-c sized sensors to a video cam form factor, you are gonna wanna hold on to that setup. The audio in and easy exposure controls alone are enough for me to justify hanging on to my HVX200a... for now :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

definitely hold onto it... i WAS going to sell my LEX + XH-A1 combo, but if another Best Buy no interest deal pops up I might just have to get a 5D!

I've been testing one out for the past week and I'm really digging it. Manual control > 24p, but both of them would be irresistible!

Now it's 24fps etc.

PappasArts, 3 questions if you please.

a. Would you wait for a factory release version with 24p, or just a firmware 24p
would be enough to pull the trigger on a purchase.?

b. Do you think the 5D sensor size is the ultimate in sensor size? or do you think the smaller, s-35 size, of 35mm film, and close to the red, is a preferable size for film look?

[Are we really getting Vistavision, cause of the cropping?]

c. Do you think the 60d may be released with close to a s-35 sensor size, and possible have a BETTER film look than the mark2? { not to mention cheaper}

{ with hopefully less of an aliasing issue in crop design?}

thanks bro,

I can totally relate to that issue.

A few weeks ago I thought about selling my HVX+M2 setup in order to get a 5D setup. I am glad I didnt so far.
...well...I am ordering a 5D setup anyways in addition...

But a true motion camera is worth a lot when it comes to situations where you just need to totally rely on your equipment! I will always take it with me on shoots that need to be done in time and budget

A. Funny you ask. When it first came out, my first initial thought was wait at least six months for them to adjust the production line to optimum level. Then I decided to overall wait, partially do to fiscal and to see what might be coming next. I also had lots of reservations without manual control; I liked the images that I was seeing, just didn't like that the camera was not controllable. Now that it is fixed, I was hoping that if I do get it, I would like to with the latest FW from the latest production line cameras. Now that 24P is coming, I'm feeling the itch to buy, however maybe wait too for the 24 to be loaded in already. It would be nice to get it all complete ( like it says in the manual: specifications subject to change without notice; the legal clause to improve without them publicly telling you ). I know for sure they make minor improvements when the feed back comes from the users and service departments globally.

B. Well, I come from large format down to 35mm. So I would love 6x17 sensors if they did it. However; reality time. I actually prefer the APS-C and APS -H sensor like RED or S35mm over the full frame for film work. I'm not saying anything bad about full frame, however for narrative productions it appears that it's the middle ground for gaining more DOF or less DOF when you need it; nice middle ground.

C. The 60D is for sure going to be APS- C or H. It indeed is going to have a more improved CMOS and be slightly cheaper, but not much. I think that the 60D is going to have all the refined and learned methods that the photo division didn't understand when they designed the 5D's video system. The head of Canon was interviewed at PMA and made no excuses that cheaper cameras following the current line will leap frog upper ones. He said basically that was the result of the progression of technology. So the 60D for sure is most likely going to be a pretty damn good camera. I also believe Canon is working hard to make the 5D hold it's own by doing all this post firmware work to keep it at a good level. By doing this they can squeeze every possible dollar that the 5D can make in the market. This explosion that the Photo divisions has received over the video function is unparalleled from the past cameras over any single feature like this in their DSLR's.

I'm sure aliasing will be reduced now that the video is a major integral part of the system. They'll probably spend more time getting the down-covert mathematics from 5K to 2K more refined.

So it's just a slightly bad idea then. I have a buyer for my HVX already for $2800.00 and a buyer for my LEX for $1000.00=$3800.00. that's all I need for damn near a full setup. I have rails, monitor, shoulder mount, FF, and lenses already. DAMN you canon, Damn you.

seriously, I think I will just stack my chips and get the 5D in addition to what I have already. By then maybe the the coveted 24p update will be out.

hehe. it wasn't easy I was hangin for the D300s/D400 but I don't have the patience and I've seen a lot of good stuff on vimeo that barely scratches the surface of the manual enabled MKII.

It arrives tomorrow. I'll shoot something over the weekend, nothing special just the kids playing in the park in cinemascope.

Nothing special???
25 years from now you're not gonna give 2 sh!ts about looking at some selfindulgent actor on a narrative you produced... but your KIDS... in retrospect it's gonna be some of the most special things you'll ever capture!
Can't wait to see it, I'm sure they'll look especialy cute being supported by great bokeh
