24 F Quality Issues

I just got this camera and I was wondering if quality suffers at all shooting in 24F? I am planning my first feature and have an ultimatie goal of showing it on the big screen.

Thanks!

Some will tell you that there is a slight drop in resolution in 24F HDV mode vs. 60i HDV mode. A while back, there was a side by side comparison done between the various HD cameras. At the time the A1 wasn't out yet, so the XL-H1 was used. Here is the link.

It is imperceptible in my opinion. I wouldn't worry about it, the A1 has a ton of resolution in either mode.

If you shoot 60i I don't think that anyone would notice the difference in resolution, and you would be sacrificing the beautiful 24F look. You will of course need to jump through some extra loops to get 24P from 60i as well.

honestly, i know many films are shot at a 180 degree shutter equivalent to approximately 1/48th, but canon's 1/48th i find to be extremely blurrish. I generally shoot my stuff now that i dont have the dvx100b anymore, on 1/60th or higher for effect.

Thanks for your help. You also have to keep in mind 1/48th of a second shutter vs. 1/60th at 60i I suppose regarding the light?

If you are shooting run-n-gun at night or in a dark interior with little available light, then yes, 1/48 shutter speed will help a little. You will probably need to use some gain in those situations. If you are using controlled lighting, then I don't think the difference is that huge.

I find 1/48th on the A1 to be fine, but everyone sees things differently. In the end it is subjective. I find even 1/24th speed to be filmlike as long as you are not moving too much, while others seem to hate that slower shutter speed.

I will say that from my observations the higher speeds, like 1/75 or 1/120, don't seem as "stroby" on the A1 as they do on the DVX in 24p.
